Cutting out under load

Hi, i have a mk1 caddy with a mk2 golf 1.8gti digifant engine fitted. It has been running ok for a while but seemed to lack torque and was rather gutless and fuel consumption was bad so i decided to check the timing as per the procedure in the tuneup topic in the maintence section it was way out so i changed it, again as per the procedure in the tuneup topic ever since i got the timing right, it cuts out when i give it a bit of stick? as soon as i put it under some load(higher revs than normal driving) it just cuts out completely, if i wait a few minutes it will restart and if i drive it normally(under 3k rpm) it wont cut out on me but as soon as i want to go above 3-4k rpm it just cuts out on me so basically everytime i accelerate heavily in a gear and get the rpm up high it cuts the engine off completely and wont restart untill i give it a few moments. Any idea what this could be?

sounds like over fueling? does it cut out if you are staionary? Disconect the wiring to the AFM (big lump next to the air box) and rev it again. I think

nope doesnt cut out when stationery, Only under heavy acceleration so im guessing its the amount of throttle opening thats doing it? i recently changed the MAF as i thought it was part of my idle problem, read that it may be related somewhere. Do you think the second hand one i have fitted is faulty, would this cause these problems, im going to change it back tomorrow as the problem does only seem to have come about since i changed it.

ignore that, its still broke, Just cut out on me and wont restart, what the hell could it be!?!

So what happens after it cuts out? The engine turns over but won't fire up?

yeah, it turns over and just doesnt fire at all, i have spark from the coil at the king lead, but last time it happened i took the plugs out, i got no spark at the plug, only a very faint one after loads of turning over and they are very dry so im guessing its not fueling either? i have changed plugs, leads and rotor arm since then. Its weird though as i went probably 5 miles with it fine, pulled fine in all the gears unlike before, all of a sudden completely cuts out, just like all the power has been cut to it but wipers and lights continue to work?

oh and the idle is also very erratic? i dont know if the 2 are connected
