Have a look on www.volkswagen.co.uk     have a look at the list of R32 available across the uk, a dealer can get hold of any car you instruct, so might bag yourself a bargain

it would have to be the GTI for me.   I was faced with the same option.

I loved the R32, but it just felt/looks dated when the new model has been around for a while.  I used to have a BMW E46 M3, and although i loved that car, i would never buy another cos of the new E90 (or whatever it is now) is out, and it totally makes the E46 look dated.

I went for the GTI and am very pleased with my selection.  I would have bought the new R32, but couldnt stretch the extra cash for one.

anyway, my answer to this question......... definalty the GTI!

There's a Mk4 R32 at Benfield Silverlink, Newcastle for 16995 if your interested. I'm sure it will be on the VW website.

Quick question i was looking at the new GTIs and they got 200 hp and for a nice loaded one im looking at 28k. Then i looked at the r32s like a 2004 they got 250 hp and im only looking at 25k. So my question is this is it worthe buying the brand new one, would take much to make it as fast as the 2004 r32 or should i just get the r32?

If its a 2004 R32, then it must be a Mk4. Sounds very expensive for 25k. IMO there is no comparison between the Mk4/5 even if the Mk4 is an R32. GTI Mk5 for me any day of the week. I think you should try for the Ed30 if you can still get one.

Hi Brando,

GTI everytime...although I'm biased as you can see in my sig

Seriously though, I would pit my ED30 anytime against a MKV R32 (in the dry anyway...and probably even when "mildly Moist") Why, well, at the expense of getting shot at by R32 owners:-

R32 has good all weather grip and an amazing soundtrack, but is a good 200+kg heavier than the ED30. It has a bigger thirst than the Ed30, it will shortly cost you £400 a year to tax and is slower than an Ed30 over a standing quarter AND through the gears where it matters. The ED 30 is also more "exclusive" if you like that kind of thing. The R32 doesn't feel as nimble as the ED30 and IMO is therefore not as exciting to drive "enthusiastically". An R32 is rated by VW as 250PS which equates to 247BHP although it has been shown that some have less than this and none actually have more (awaiting to be proved wrong), wheras the ED30 is rated at 230ps/227bhp, but has been shown to produce more in the region of 240+bhp (see superchips standard figures at 244bhp) :nerd:

Oh, the R32 does come in blue and doesn't has a pimply gearknob...sorry to steal your quote Phil

i have driven all of the above, and more recently my freinds r32 mk4 golf, it has 13k on the clock. i was supprised how old it felt after coming from my ed30, the brakes were soggy too. and although the v6 sounds great they just lack the great feel of turbo kick us gti drivers get. i would defenately say gti or ed30 gti, plus remap ofcourse. btw in the autocar track test the r32 mk5 and gti mk5 were bang on identical 0 to 100 mph

surprised that the speed is the same to 100mph, so makes them both faster then the Mk 4 R32 in standard guise.Just need to catch them dam Edition 30 owners!

It was still there on Mon, just parked around the back of the showroom. It might be worth your while giving them a call.
