16v or 8v box?
« on: 22 May 2007, 13:29 »
given that iv'e probably screwed my 16v gearbox up and i can't find a local replacement, how would the performance be effected if i fitted an 8v unit? (i know i'd need a different clutch) does anyone know how different the ratios actually are? i've heard different opinions about this.
Any help/advice would be greatly appriciated!

so only difference is a longer 5th on the 8v? i wonder why? 8v gear boxes seem a lot easier to find!

would i also be right in thinking that the 8v box would offer better acceleration in exchange for loosing a bit off of the top end?

No better acceleration - just a longer 5th gear for more relaxing long distance cruising

3rd is longer as well, I put an 8v box on mine when the 16v box let rip.I find it better than the 16v as in 5th at 80 it is 3500rpm whereas before with the 16v I was at 4100 so always tapping the cam and butterfly fuel economy has gone up too will find out about acceleration at York raceway soon :) but 70-80mph in 3rd is fackin quality :D

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

My mate put an 8v gearbox in his 16v and he reckons it accelerated quicker, infact when I had a clio 182 I struggled to get past him

the final drive is not different in 8v boxes. the 5th gear is simply longer in an 8v. meaing they are slower accelerating in 5th than the equivalent 5th gear in a 16v box

all this ballix about 8v boxes being quicker than 16v boxes is a load of sh!te.

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

the larger the Final Drive (FD) figure, the quicker the acceleration across all gears

the smaller the actual gear ratio the longer the gear is
