16v or 8v box?

Well that's your opinion, but other people are simply posting their experiences with an 8v box as the topic asked, so for all we know it may be better than the 16v box, just as monza finds it. I've heard a few times the best combination being a 16v with an 8v box, I personally don't know, but have you tried a 16v with an 8v box before commenting?

Haha!  Not meaning to be argumentative or anything but its not down to opinions, the links show the gear ratios - the fact is there is NO DIFFERENCE between them apart from 5th. Acceleration will be EXACTLY the same until you change into 5th.

when people post their experience of a box it helps if they know what box is actually in the car, (gearbox code on the bell housig if anyone wants to check theres) that way you'll know exactly what box is in your car. there are so many variations that can be put in a golf. including gearboxes from Driver, Diesel, MK3 & austin Maestro & Montego's gearboxes all fit GTI's

im not having a go at anyone im simply stating that its in black n white that the 8v GTI box ratios are no different from the 16v GTI box apart from 5th (4th time i know!!)

No better acceleration - just a longer 5th gear for more relaxing long distance cruising

the final drive is not different in 8v boxes. the 5th gear is simply longer in an 8v. meaing they are slower accelerating in 5th than the equivalent 5th gear in a 16v box

the smaller the actual gear ratio the longer the gear is

sorry if i seem stupid :embarassed:
its just i'm not familiar with gearboxes and keep hearing different opinions.
don't really want to waste a fair bit of money on the wrong part.

My mate put an 8v gearbox in his 16v and he reckons it accelerated quicker, infact when I had a clio 182 I struggled to get past him 

thats just due to it being a french car

As Gambit said loads of different types of box can be fitted, a mate of mine had an 8v and stuck a diesel box in and said it made a big improvement on acceleration and top speed (although I aint sure what box he took out before changing it so don't know if he was comparing it to an original 8v box), dunno if anyone else has noticed this?

When i got my 16v it crunched when i put it into 2nd gear, with the help of a guy near me who specialises in old VWs found out that the gearbox was full of diesel parts, we put an 8v gearbox in it and its improved dramatically. The reason for an 8v is cause apparently the 16v box is prone to blowing up. Thats probably what happened to my original box in the first place hence why they replaced it with diesel parts.

I have heard from alot of dub heads that the 8v will obviously require a 8v clutch assembly kit but the acc will be quicker but top end slower than the 16 vavler box.
I have an 16v box on ebay but the diff has gone its on there for silly money but i still have the reciept for it costing £550 full recon box, i am sure the gearings are fine so you can use your casing and assemble all the gears from mine into yours. Item no: 150126506848

£20 starting bid is what its starts from, but believe me there are very little of these 16v boxes around now but the people that have one for sale want top dollar for them. So £20 starting bid cant go wrong.

8v box on mine as I have found it after driving it with a 16v box until it went bang.

Fitting, piece of piss get an 8v clutch plate and put it back together.
1st, 2nd no different, 3rd slighty longer quicker pickup, it does say on the link that they are the same maybe my box is slightly different I don't know but 3rd is definitely different, 4th no difference 5th much longer so on private track tests 80 is 3800 which is good for fuel economy when cruising. 90 is 4200 then cam comes in top speed seems easier to reach as I found the 16v box ran out of puff at 120ish. now hitting 120 is about 5000 meaning I got much more to go.
