Just got back from my hols, hence late reply.
This is truely shocking, but sadly just one of the very obvious snake-pits to avoid when buying from an importer, or car supermarket. Unfortunately, even franchised dealers can have access to old stock, though I hope not 2 years old!
A couple of points to mention. Firstly, someone mentioned contacting VW UK - I personally don't think they will be interested, as this particular car was supplied by an importer, and not an officially franchised dealer. However, contacting VW Germany would be worthwhile, as they will be able to trace them to the supplying dealer in Europe, and hopefully impose sanctions on the offending dealer. Afterall, it is tactics like these, of bulk buying, not being able to sell, then letting them rot in a field/docks - which not only devalues the "brand" or model (in terms of poor quality), but it also affects residiual values through oversupply!
Secondly, the OP mentioned the VIN tag. If you are EVER considering purchasing a "stock" car, be it from an importer, or franchised dealer, always check the 10th digit of the VIN number. This 10th digit (on all European VINs from all manufacturers) indicates the "model year" build of the car - for example, current 10th digit for new cars should be "7", for 2007. However, model years do not coincide with calender years, and usually start from the previous July/August time.
