Might as well sell your 8v and buy a 16v - unless you've spent loads on mods for your 8v already ;).  16v do cost a bit more, but not much.  Certainly less than the cost of new engine and god knows what else.  I'm guessing (but I don't know) you'd need to do some stuff to the gearbox (diff ratios???) and other stuff.  Just guessing, but I can't see it would be cheap.  Also, when u come to sell her on, it might look a bit odd - was an 8v, now a 16v.  Presumably the V5 would still say 8v??????? :-\

Just a few thoughts - useful?
1998 Mk3 GTi 8v - now sold :(

2003 BMW 320d 150bhp now bought :)
2002 Seat Leon (almost a Mk4!)

The engine are bound to have differences in things like compression ratio's etc so I wouldn't even attempt it *blind* so to speak ...

With the money it would cost I'd say either mod your 8v or get an engine swap for a 16v ... safer and alot less hassle !

Don't bother with the 16v head on a 8v, lots of different parts to swap over. R/H drive engine is the same as a L/H drive one. Manifolds etc may be different and you will also need the exhaust down pipe, engine ecu, wiring harness, flywheel and clutch, coolant hoses, alternator, etc, etc.

Don't take my word for it, but I have heard that you can directly bolt on a Mk2 16v gti cylinder head onto a mk3 8v gti engine. In fact this was something I was going to consider doing myself so when I have done some more research on it I will tell you.
A second hand mk2 16v gti head only costs about ?100 - ?200 depending on its condition, and then you could have it reconditioned for little money. I don't think any parts need to be changed over.
Hope this helps and if you find out this is impossible please inform me.
Thanks.
