RESULT!
had the timing and CO done today, the new garage i took it to were very helpful, printed off the 8v tuning guide (thanks rubjonny) and hey presto. instantly smoother right through the rev band, much better idle and
almost no pinking - it makes the noise very rarely, rather than right up the rev band, anyway im happy with it (could it be the 97 RON unleaded?)
there were a couple of point made by the garage though -
* the CO mixture was far too lean, i.e. under 0.2! this has been adjusted.
* the spark plugs, although only 6 months old, were absolutley knackered due to pinking etc
* the cylinders are a bit coked up (what can i do to de-coke them?)
* someone had fitted the flywheel in the wrong place so they had fun trying to find the timing marks!
* blue temp sender and knock sensor were both ok
* at my discretion the timing was set at the suggested 2-2.5k rpm, although normally the garage would have done it at idle
PLUS... it still returns 40mpg on a
spirited drive
