Temp gauge
« on: 15 April 2007, 21:57 »
Hi i bought my first mk2 gti 8v 1990. The problem is the temp gauge sits just in the white square but the top hose is red hot you cant touch it its that hot the fan is always on but the bottom hose is only luke warm. Is this normal or is there something wrong.

thanks in advance

your thermostat is missing... the top hose is always hot because the waters striaght out of the engine... as the fans always on the the water at the bottom will be a lot colder as the fan cooling it..

sounds like your fans been wired to run constant and not run on the thermo switch on the rad. you should check this before reporting back.

The fan only comes on when the temp gauge moves from the cold to the warm area the fan is not on when cold.
You can really smell the heat when its hot and all this happens when driving on motorway or around town

that doesnrt sound right at all, sounds like someone has removed the thermostat to make up for an overheating issue!  I'd look at the water pump first off, do a full system flush, replace the thermostat then bleed the system.
I've posted a how2 guide on checking the coolant system :)
