No power to fog light??
« on: 02 February 2004, 14:19 »
The drivers side fog light will not come on, i have taken the unit out & attached it to the battery & it works.

The lights also work on dip & normal beam, which i find weird as the fog light gets it's power from the main beam??

anyone??

id check the wiring from the fog back then

is this a late spec golf?? (going by your name it wouldnt be) only late spec came factory fitted fogs

if its early spec then it may have been wired in at a later date with inline fuses maybe

Are these foglights mounted under the bumper or in the grill?

As gambit rightly said have a look for fuses that may be inline as the early MK2's didnt have fogs as standard and it sounds like your car has had them retro fitted.

You've taken your light off the car and connected to the battery and it works. Is it using the chassis as the earth or does it have its own wire?

I would imagine it is chassis earth and I would say it might be wise to check the state of the earth, remove the light and see if the mounting hole is rusty.

I would to test it run a wire from the body of the fog to the negative terminal of the battery to see if it lights up.

The fogs are on the grill, as far as i'm aware my MK2 came fitted with, fogs in the grill.

It's a weird setup Mk2 as the previous owner had NEVER swapped the cam, But when my dad changed the rockerbox gasket, there was a high lift cam in it, higher than a GTI cam???

I intend to check for the earth wire when it's light (weekend prob 4 me)

they aint fogs in the grill they are driving lamps that are only meant to come on with the full beam.

the wiring for them simply runs off the main beam wire for the main headlamps.
