Roof Spoiler
« on: 02 April 2007, 13:37 »
The spoiler I have chosen (looks like a bad choice!) does not use the existing fixing holes.

So I have two problems -

1. Drilling and fixing through the side metal of the hatch. (double skinned)

2. Filling/sealing the 3 existing holes in the glass.

Any advice of method or materials to use welcome.

can you not bond the spoiler to the roof? got to be better than drilling holes through the hatch because if you don't seal them properly you'll end up with a lot of rust!

Not really because it only just touches the roof on the rear edge. The only parts that touch are the outer ends that extend about 150mm down the side of the hatch.

Thats exactly what I did do joe!

When I eventually got hold of them late this afternoon!
(the're an internet based company and dont seem to like taking phone calls)
Their idea is that I cut a large hole in the inner skin of the hatch, big enough for a socket and a small hole in the outer skin so that its only secured on the outer skin.
That gets over the problem of the short studs.
However i still have the problem of the existing fixing holes in the glass!
All I can think of there is to put some tape on the inside and fill the holes from the outside with some kind of mastic.

Why not just fill the holes with p40 fibre glass filler? then smooth filler over the top of them??

Is it possible to source a replacement hatch? I know hardcore was doin some really cool smoothed ones. If your gettin the car re-sprayed at a later date it may be an option.

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

Dont exactly fancy travelling up to Skeggie/Lincoln again so soon!
Also yes I am having a respray but only an external not messing around with internal stuff. So the chances of getting a Mystic Blue hatch are slim.

An alternative maybe a guy that has rear glass with no holes in!
How easy is it to swap glass?

^^^ thats what i was about to suggest, get a base model car with no factory spoiler... thats what i did! you might have to get the new glass tinted to match the rest of the gti glass though.
