Wheel arches! Again
« on: 28 March 2007, 23:27 »
Hello all havn't been here for a while and i appologise for the question now incase it has been asked before....

I'm seriously thinking of removing the plastic wheel arch trims and door mouldings from my 16v and replacing the mouldings with the CL/GL type (not sure if there's a difference?). I just want to change the look of it to renew our relationship!

What i'd like to know if any persons would be kind enough, is the best way to do it. Can anyone give me a procedure to follow that will ensure a good job and help me avoid any pitfalls? And is there any parts i might need to replace after removing the arch trims?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Just drill out the rivets from under the arch, and they just pull off.
On my last gti I literally just PULLED them all off, without removing the rivets lol - worked the same

I'd say try and pull them from the arch by hand and look behind them, if you see anything that looks like rust etc leave them

Im really into the colourcoded look at the moment, if my arches werent removed id do this!

Yea its an easy job. There are 4 flat head rivets in the front arch and 3 in the back. Also watch the fronts as they have a small piece of door moulding on them and that has a push on clip behind it.

Your main problem will be finding the CL/GL/arches! They were also standard on some VR6's.
The way I did it in the end was spot a car with them on (standard) and take that reg. number. I was lucky I had both a GL and a VR6 in my street!
Then go to a VAG dealer or Eurocarparts and ask fro the 53mm primered ones. Some call them painted. For a 2 door there are 6 parts (3 either side) and for a 4 door there are 8 parts. If you get stuck I have the Eurocarparts parts numbers.

Hi Len - would you be so kind to let me know the part numbers as this is one of my projects for the summer, cheers Andy

ps - could you recommend any side skirts I could get at the same time, no point having colour coded arches and black side trims, thanks again

Cheers Len, thanks for adding that. I want to change my door mouldings as well. From your other post, they come primed for spraying ? is that right ?

Yes they come in a grey primer.

I am currently spraying mine with matt black from a can to see if I prefer that to body colour.

Thanks for all the info you lot, this is going to be a great help.

From what you say matt it seems like a simple job which is good to hear as i heard it could be a nightmare and yeah i once thought of doing the colour coded thing, the one shown looks pretty good. I'll check the metalwork before i take them right off (hope i dont find any rust or owt like shown on another post!! you lot would probably hear the screams)

Thanks for the details Len i'll use them for sure, oh by the way have you ever checked out www.gpcvwaudi.com? A few years back at Gti International i bought a Vr6 front bumper skirt form their stand and still have a catalogue so was checking it out the other day and they had the parts listed (door mouldings) but no prices so will probably give them a ring too. I checked the web site and it didn't have as much as i thought it would though, and no mouldings . If anyone needs anything like trim etc have a look.

Thanks again
