How long will tyres last on ED30?
« on: 28 March 2007, 17:08 »
Was in dealers this afternoon and decided to take out the full monty of servicing, maintenance AND tyres.

There is no clause in the contract that limits the amount of tyres you can have in the 3yr tyre plan and the dealer has said that they would fit Conti's whenever they wear down. Going on spirited driving how long would peeps say that a front pair of Conti tyres would last on the ED30? I would do around 30k in 3 yrs, so I would have thought at least 4 tyres, so at £7 per month it seemed like a goer. Or have I c0cked up? :undecided:

I think you'll find the tyres will only be replaced for reasonable wear and tear. If they deem your wear rate to be excessive who knows what kind of an argument would follow.

I would of thought 15k on a set of front sounds reasonable, but wouldn't be surprised if it's nearer 10k.

Also, don't forget that VW gets to choose what tyres you get. Bit of a bummer if you get the apparently blighted Dunlops.

Hi Hurdy,

How much does this servicing/tires package cost?  I've ordered thru a broker so wasn't offered this
but I assume I can get my local VW dealer to add the package.  Does it then allow you to use any VW
serving or are your tied to the dealer you purchased it from?

Hi Hurdy,

I got the full whack for £25 per month

10k miles per year (i chose time/distance service regime = 10k miles or 12 months service interval)

It includes all service costs - so that would be 3 services over 3 yrs.
I confirmed that it would also cover the air con service at 2 yrs.
It upgrades the 1 year breakdown service to 3 years.
I was told it includes the first MOT and any findings arising.
Also includes windscreen wiper replacements if needed.
Tyre replacement is covered, so even if you only get through 4 x 18" tyres in three years that would recoup around £400 ish

I haven't worked out all the math, but it seemed like a good deal
The overall cost is Just over £900 for three years, so roughly speaking:-

3 x services at around £150 = £450
4 tyres over 3 yrs = £400
1 MOT at year 3 = £50
1 air con service at year 2 = £90

So there you have it the above already adds up to £990 so it makes me feel a bit better.

I don't know if you are tied to the Dealer or not, or whether the package would be transferrable to subsequent owners. Neither of these are really a consideration for me as I've been with the same dealer for a long time and have always received good customer service and will be keeping the car for at least 3 years.

Fook me - if you manage to get 15k miles from the front boots, then you just aint drivin' it!

My standard GTI has 6k miles, and the front Dunlops are down to 4mm.  2½-3mm, and it is Mich Pilot Sport PS2 time  :smug:

On a previous car I owned, I actually managed to wear out a set of front Pilot Sports in just two months, and the bloke at the tyre dealer nearly fell off his chair when I went back for some more!

I'd say yes. You'll get it cheaper for your low mileage and some servicing has to be done according to age rather than mileage.

Hurdy - you also get the brake fluid change done too! Wasn't told about the MOT though?
