Ruddy ticking noise
« on: 27 March 2007, 21:35 »
i've got a 91 plate 8v , she's getting on a bit , 145K on the clock . When i accelerate between 2000 - 2500 revs , i get a ticking noise from my engine , anyone had this , or is it purely because it's been around the block a few times ?

The most likely culprit is hydraulic tappets, does it do it most when you first start the engine from cold ?

no mate , does it all the time , no matter if it's been running for five minutes or five hours . Hydraulic tappets , sounds nice and pricey .

Its not a big job if you follow the Haynes properly. Just don´t c*ck up the cam timing!!
Should not take much more than a couple of hours for the un-initiated.

yeah not too bad, whip the cam out and replace, refit cam, drive :)
only thing you need to worry about is you need to remove/replace the cam clamp bolts in the right order, and refit the cam clamps exactly the same as they came off!

Before you do that though, try doing an oil flush and refill with synta silver and a genuine or decent quality oil filter, you can get these from vwspares as well :)

Yeah I had a ticking tappet but only on start up when she had been sat for a while (all weekend). So I did the engine flush jobby, new oil and filter. Now I get the tappet noise EVERY time I start. Derrrr!
