Cheers for the comments guys. Going to try to persuade Keith to get it tweaked a bit once run in. Is it true the engine is a detuned S3 engine, rather than a tuned GTI engine? The massive gains to be had from a remap alone seem to suggest that.

Standard wheels are sat in the garage.

James, can't remember exactly where the thread is, but somewhere on this site there is a big discussion regarding the origins of the Ed30 engine, i.e is it the same as the S3 or not.  I think the general consensus was that it had the same turbo and a couple of other bits, can't remember exactly what, but I'm sure someone on here will point you in the right direction.  I also seem to remember that the Ed30 has the Gti intercooler, whilst the S3s is much bigger.  Before anyone says anything, I know that alone does not create extra power as intercoolers are there to reduce 'heat soak'.

Whilst I'm on the topic, I got the opportunity the other day to sit a Gti next to an Ed30 with their bonnets open.  You can clearly see the difference regarding the turbos as the Ed30 has a large pipe coming down the top of the left hand side of the engine, front to back, the Gti doesn't.  So I totally agree with others on here that the Ed30 engine is not just a remap of the ECU.  I'll stop now as this is bound to create a few replies.

If you want a simple way to proove that its not a remap, just go to www.mybluefin.co.uk and enter the GTI details, followed by the Ed30.
I realise the Bluefin is not for everyone, but the website does show huge gains on the Ed30 over the GTI which indicate that theres definately modifications under the bonnet rather than just a modified ECU!

It has been said before also that Superchips are a pretty shyte company for tuning the GTI - just look on their primary web site, and they even do chips for Ladas - hmm automotive excellence, and really up there with the Bosch MED9 used in the GTI !!!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info on the engine...sounds promising!

The elastic bands (!) are Toyo T1-S, 235/35 I believe. When Keith took me for a spin, the ride certainly didn't seem overly harsh, although couldn't say if it suffers from tramlining.

very very nice indeed, i must admit the aesthetics of the ed30's are growing on my, normally i like the contrast of the black trim but seeing that all clean and shiny has won me over.

as for the wheels, much better than that originals.

Brilliant - I can maybe get my Riva up to 200bhp lol!

I did say Superchips are not to everyones taste... but it gives a visual indication on their site that the Ed30 has more to offer over the standard GTI than half leather and red stitching!!

Yes, agreed - and SuperChips may be fine for simple turbo boosts on diesels - but with the Bosch MED9 on the GTI, they are just completely out of their depths.  (look at their own power and torque curves - all they do is increase turbo boost - not good for reliability, nor economy, which is part of what the FSI is about!).

I'm sorry, but I repeatedly end up scratching my head, whenever peeps mention the GTI and SuperChips in the same sentence - because there are considerably better chip tuners out there - companies who actually specialise soley with VAG products, and can actually modify all aspects of the ECU.
