Could fit a turbo!

But why?

Why not go for Nitros?

Not a DIY job! Unless you have tube bending equipment and are a very good welder. A big bore pipe has to come out of the exhaust to power the turbo.

Im about to fit a turbo to my 1.4 its going to be my spring project.  The engines coming out for a full rebuild with stronger components etc... I don't want to run massive boost but it will certainly give it a kick up the backside.

You can fit a supercharger to a 1.4, as well as a turbo.  It does however depend on what engine it has.

Mine is the AEX 1.4 which is also used in the polo and seat ibiza.  its diffrent to the usual Vdub engines (mounted differently)  So supercharging isn't easy.  Its MPI injection as well so its a plastic manifold which wont take much boost before it splits or something.  Im not sure if it will be worth making up a metal one (pricy) or just keeping the boost low and have done with it.

If you want more info feel free to PM Me.  I have worked out everything i need to for my engine and have all the prices etc...

HTH

It'd be cheaper and easier to swap the engine over.

If you want to stick with a 1.4, you could get a 1.4 16v engine from a Polo, which has 100bhp. Or you could get a 1.6 16v from the Polo or Lupo GTI.
Getting a 1.4 16v from a crashed polo would probably cost a few hundred for the engine, then a few hundred more for the fitting, meaning the bill would be at least a grand, and would that really be worthwhile. Once the mods are declared to the insurance it'd be no cheaper than insuring a GTI, and you could just buy a golf GTI for a grand anyway.

Yea. Theres only one reason i'm sticking with the original engine and that is because i'm curious as to how much u can get out of it.   Its a mission to turbo charge the stock engine rather then to make the car faster.  I don't intend on keeping it all that long, i have my GTI and GT-Four for power so this is just for fun.

started the colour coded bumpers in 96. i know cause mine are colour coded, and mines only a 1.4, i wouldnt advise putting a turbo on it unless you are going to rip it out and rebuild with stronger components, wouldnt be the first standard engine i've seen blow a whole in the black cause they put a turbo on a standard engine, the components wouldnt be able to take the temperature or the beating.

I'd either say do an engine swap with something a bit bigger with more kick, or just save your pennies and buy a VR6.
