Replacing standard HU in Mk5 GTI
« on: 11 March 2007, 23:25 »
My GTi Edition 30 is on order at the moment and so is my new Alpine iDA-X001 head unit.  I didnt opt for any audio extras on my factory build as I intend removing it and putting in my own stuff.

I've found some tutorials on how to get the standard HU out of the car which is a start, and I've also found fascia adapters which convert the existing double din to single din with a storage pocket.

Can anyone tell me what sort of wiring is currently in the car, and what sort of adapter I need (if any?) to convert the MK5 leads to ISO style on a normal head unit?  I want to have everything ordered and ready so that I can dive straight in!  I also have a Parrot CK3300 to fit - but I may go for the Alpine KCE-300BT bluetooth adapter instead if its available by the time my car arrives.

Cheers...
Pete

The mark 5 Golf runs on a canbus wiring system this will also control the stalk control if the car has them. Racetech can supply one of these a little more expensive than a standard ISO lead at £70

Pardon my ignorance, but where is Racetech, and do you have a part number for what I need?

I was looking at buying the Soundlinx CAN01VW Canbus adapter - but its £110.  Obviously if a £70 one does the same job I'd be better off with it!

I already have the basic ISO lead, but have been advised that I'll need to cut a few cables to fit this, and also that the dimmer function (put headlights on and stereo dims) wont work with this and possibly the phone mute wont work either.

I'd rather pay the extra to get the right adapter so that everything works as it should.

Doh - just read your signature and found the web address for Racetech there!

I dont have the multi function steering wheel - so I have no need for the buttons to work, but I DO want it to dim the display and work with the phone mute.  If your adapter does all this then I'll order one now!

rtuk , can you confirm that the racetech wiring harness  will allow full function (including phone button) of  the steering wheel controls (07 GTI)  with aftermarket  head unit ? I am thinking of installing  a Becker grand prix 7995 to gain bluetooth  phone &  better ipod integration( id tag) but I don't want to lose the mfsw controls. Any opinion on the above greatly appreciated.
