DO NOT GO FOR THE SOUNDPACK PLUS fella!  it is utter utter tosh!

we've had a refund for our soundpack plus, but it's taken so long to sort out and now the Golf is going!!

soundpack plus = 10 speakers/improved output and six cd headunit!  the vibration in the door cards is shocking, even with the bass really low!

save the money and get it done somewhere else!

Well to add total confusion, i have the RCD 500 with sound pack and have none of these problems. However the unit is far louder (excellet clarity) than i am ever likely to use. I'm not that old but i do find driving with a full on night club in my car a bit distracting. So i would save your money and buy a multi functional wheel instead as i wish i did.

I ordered the soundpack for my Ed30, which is due del for the middle of May.  I'm a bit worried as to all the quotes on this site about the upgrade, but I'll report back when I've used it.  I think one of the reasons I went for it was because I initially considerd the sat nav, which came with 10 speakers and upgraded sound I believe.  But after seeing how much VW wanted for the sat nav, I decided that a Tom Tom would be better value.  I know its not going to be as neat as the fitted system, but saving 1000 notes swayed me some what.  Also, whilst I'm on the subject, the price of the cds with the maps on for the VW system somewhat disuaded me.
Anyway, back to the soundpack. I just wish VW offered a BOSE system, now that would be .

The soundpack is the one thing that's annoyed me about the Ed30. The rumble in windows/doors is noticable at very low levels if the song has any bass whatsoever.

My point exactly!  all i can say lads IS COMPLAIN!  VW have said they had only a couple of complaints at HQ, ours being one.  Once they have enough complaints then they have to rectify the issue!!!!!

We ended up with a full refund and are now getting rid of the motor!!!!

Very interesting - what route did you go down to complain? I'm rather annoyed with mine, and it is something that winds me up pretty much everytime I get in the car and pop a CD on.

Did you go straight to VW or via the dealer? Got an address handy?

Stealer first - and then makesure they agree with you.  After that, it will be raised to VW uk.  I can some contact details but they will send you back to the dealer.  Once VW uk are involved, then there will be a bit of ping pong between them and the dealer.  Also a fair bit of denial! Then your dealer will say it is a 'characteristic' of the system!!  And you will use info from their own site 'near perfect acoustics'
It's a proper pain in the butt, but if we all just sat around doing nothing about the problems with have with our overpriced then nothing would ever improve.  Once VW have enough complaints escalated to HQ then they will action a VW fix.  Should you accept any offer of a fix from the dealer (stereo shop fix etc) then be careful as it will affect any future warranty work with respect to door cards/stereo.  They tried this with us, we declined!
After we got the full refund, we have signed an agreement accepting that we have no redress with the stereo quality in the future, which is fine with me.

The Golf has been a real dissapointment to me - it should be such a great car

You can also get dealer supplied speaker "upgrade kits", the fronts (1K0 051 608 A) for £180, and the rears (1K0 051 606) for £115.

I have asked my stealer for the exact spec of these kits, but they are unable to tell me, and as Illy stated, Matt had a real run-in with VW UK on just how sh!te the soundpack was, and eventually got his money back!

I've just fitted this upgrade to the front of my car (£50 via the ebay seller) and whilst it still may not be the best sounding setup for some people, they are a huge improvement over the stock front 6 speaker setup and well worth the money (maybe not £180 though!).
