I've got the 10 speaker set up and it doesn't seem any better than the standard setup.

Not worth the money!

Better speakers alone just arent going to cut it. If you want decent sound you will need an amp, better aftermarket HU and a sub.

10 speakers came as standard on the early ones.  Penny pinching cut this down to 8 from around 06 plate onwards unless you paid extra.

I don't think the speakers are terrible its the HU that lets the side down more than anything else...

I forgot to say that I have the DVD headunit and the sound quality does actually sound quite reasonable -maybe this is a key factor?? [flamesuit on] I've come from a BOSE setup in my previous Audis [/flamesuit on] and whilst it [post-upgrade of front speakers] doesn't have the bass of the BOSE, it does have great high-end and mid-range clarity. I also noticed an improvement by disabling the GALA setting - this seemed to cause distortion.

Depends what the power output on the headunit is to the speakers. Any good aftermarket HU will have much more wattage power to send to the speakers, thus by simply upgrading the HU you get better sound with the same speakers. At a GUESS I'd have thought all the VW HU would be the same power ouput, just different features.

Im running a sub and amp on standard speakers and they seem to hold up ok (Im running the 10 speaker setup) unless it gets really loud.

Don't get me started on the quality of the VW speakers again

Any VW Golf sound system doesn't have the same build quality or sound quality that an aftermarket (even cheapish) system can produce. The only thing that has come near to basic acceptability is the new Dynaudio system....and even that can be bettered with £500 of aftermarket goodies

I disagree - not everyone wants / can afford to spend hundreds of ££'s on a new system, plus there are a lot of people that still want the OEM look.

£50 gets you a set of 6 speakers and crossover units that are miles better than the OEM stuff - that's what I'd call a bargain! Yes, they may have a VW sticker on them, but VW do not make speakers - they buy from the likes of Blaupunkt etc... if you want to improve your sounds without spending a small fortune, then give them a whirl, they fit in the OEM positions too!

You are pretty naive if you knock something you haven't even tried / listened to - the VW upgrade I'm referring to isn't the 10-speaker upgrade (I already had that in my ed 30) - it replaces the std paper cone speakers with a polypropylene membrane for the woofer and mid-range and an aluminium tweeter replaces what looks like a plastic affair as std.

I upgraded from a RCD300 to the mfd2 nav unit and the sound quality is night and day, much much better.  Only grumble is when using the integrated ipod dock the bass is a bit lacking.  As mentioned I have the 10 speaker set up (but not soundpack).

I must have listened to over 100 sound systems and aftermarket sound systems in MKV's alone. Yes, I may not have listened to this particular one. However he polyprop ones are better than stock, but still not as good as JL, Alpine, Kenwood, Hertz, Rainbow et al. Blaupunkt have good top end equipment, but some of their OEM equipment is still shockingly bad. Don't take it personally, I am simply trying to give an informed decision based on experience with other sound systems. £50 is a bargain for that particular equipment, it just isn't what I would spend money on. OEM is also a consideration if you want to keep the car in an OEM+ style - I wouldn't though.

Budget systems can be fantastic if you spend long enough looking around there are some truly great aftermarket bargains to be had.

to ED30DSG, I've just been offered one of these VW speaker upgrade kits like yours,  (like the fleabay one), brand new still in box for £25. Like you my main critisism of my standard DVD MFD2 based system (with the 10 standard speakers) is the lack of bass.

When you fitted the upgraded VW speakers was that improved significantly ? I can't really afford/justify £300+ on a nice set of Hertz, Rainbow or Focal components (even though I'm sure they will sound loads better).
