Alpine head unit keeps cutting out
« on: 05 March 2007, 10:07 »
Have just had alpine head unit and 1500w amp installed on gti sportline, but every time i turn the volume up high the head unit turns itself off completly. for a while it will come back on straight away but then turns off and wont come back on for a few hours. Have been told it might be sumthing to do with a earth wire on the allt but dont no anything about this. Has anyone got any ideas?

If you leave the volume down low would it be O.K ? If so it could be cutting out due to a possible lack of power or perhaps its got a thermal protection circuit that would switch it off if it got too hot ?

If i leave the power on low then it stays on, had a pretty rubbish panasonic in their before and that used to cut out the volume when you turned it up, the head unit would stay on but wouldnt get anything through the speakers apart from the odd crackle untilkl i turned it right down. This is the reason why i got a whole new setup thinking the panasonic had problems.

Sounds like you need a bit of rewiring. Is the HU on a permanent live? (on as sooon as you turn on ignition?)
Might be a case for a direct battery connection or one straight off the ignition switch.

If it was wired direct to a permanent live then without an ignition live connected it would stay on even with the ignition off and I'm guessing from the fact that you have a sportline that there may not be an ignition live. With some of the more modern head units your adviced to route a single fused wire from the battery to the unit to ensure a high and consistent current as they may draw more amps than the original wiring was intended to take (my head unit is Alpine and it advices a dedicated live just for the unit), and as Len allready said a good check of all the wiring wouldn't hurt. If you do run a wire thats just for the head unit then obviously make sure the earth is at least as thick as the wire you use for the live, let us know how you get on

Since removed the parcel shelf and now electric roof wont work! Not sure if this is anything to do with no parcelshelve but im bloody annoyed. Just booked it into my local electrical garage to get the whole lot sorted, think this could end up very expensive

something is shorting, len is right, dont use the headunit. you will end up blowing the internal amp in it (ive done it before and had exactly the same symptoms!).
either some speaker/sub wires are touching somewhere, which is the most probable or the remote wire is shorting, which is unlikely. could I suppose be one of the live or earth feeds to the HU but again i would seriously doubt this  . its nothing to do with the alternator earth if thats what you ment. all the speakers and the amp speakers/subs cut out yeah?
