I don't really understand the point of that rule.  Why should it affect the road-legality at all?

All you guys who have lowered, modified, and changed wheels on your MkIV's... What sort of extra cost does all this add to your insurance?  I want to know how much extra to budget!

Cheers, Rich.  ;)

made no effect on mine, i think if wheels were to go walkies, alot of insurance companies would end up paying more if they had to replace standard vw wheels!!!!! im sure they'd rather replace my fox wheels!!! ;D

well if you are a pedestrian and you sort of get hit by the corner of the car, if the wheels are within the arches then you just hit the wing. if you have your wheels outside the arches chances are something may get caught in the wheel and you go one way and your leg goes with the wheel the other way.

i know this is dependent on the wheels being straight but still it gives a lot of protection.

one of the other reasons for failing MOT is due to the amount  of spray they will generate, cos they stick out of the arch more spray will be put out by the wheel instead of going into the arch.  Which is why caterham' s and F!styled road cars have to have funny covrs over the wheel, Watch an F1 race and see how much spray one of those things chucks out in the wet.
