Speak to Elite in Rainham Essex.  The boys there are the best for wheels in the country and will help you out with tyre size.  They have a computer program that will sort the nearest tyre to the original rolling radius.  Go for 18's as 17's look too small.  Good choice on wheel!

I got 19's on mine and i no longer get any rubbing on full lock due to spacing shims, i got 235/35/19's on mine and it was the width that was causing me problems,

225/45/17 's give almost exactly the same total wheel size as the standard 195/65/15's that my '99 1.8 Mk4 GTI came with.  (636mm total diameter).

I know this because I am considering some 225/45/17's myself, and I worked it out.  I've not changed the wheels on any of my cars before, and I was wondering if I'll need any kind of spacers or something to let my arches/brakes accomodate the bigger wheels?

What fitment do I need for my '99 MkIV when I'm looking for alloys?  I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this stuff.  Can I just get any old 5 bolt thing? Also, will I need any adjustment to the position of the wheels (i.e to move them further out to aviod rubbing?) - I'm looking at 17"x8" or 18"x8" wheels ( to fit 225/45/17 or 225/40/18 tyres)

ive got 17"x8" fox evo 1's on mine with 225/45/17 tyres, they went straight on no probs, the  wheels u need are pcd 5x100, not sure of off set think its between 32-38 i cant remember, just make sure the wheels u get are suited for the golf then u should be ok!!, take some before and after shots mate would be nice to see!!!!, forgot what mine looked like on standard rims!!! naff i think!! ;D

just make sure you get your offset right because if the wheels stick out more than the arches its an mot failure.
