Hey Sean

You got any internet links, etc for reviews of the SP Sportmaxx, that give more info about the overall performance.

I did a Google search, and apart from some good writeups from people in the USA, can't find any other useful info.

Mine has them fitted, and in the (very limited) time I've had mine, they seem ok in the wet for grip and handling

I've still only got 50 miles on the clock - spent yesterday doing the armourfend (fiddly)

Ollie - where did you get this kit from and how much did it cost? thanks in advance...

It's the Halfords version - £40 - comes in a black tube and hard pressed to notice it once on!

Nope, but you can have my own personal opinion: they are $h!te, utter pants.  I've complained profoundly about them on other threads.  I really can't think of any redeeming factors in their favour - oh, they are black and round - will that do?

I did a Google search, and apart from some good writeups from people in the USA, can't find any other useful info.

Post the linkies then, I've yet to see any reviews at all on these!

WHAT, WHAT, WHAT, WHAT, WHAT, - your new Ed30 came with them ??????????  I was told by my (lieing) stealer before Xmas that because of the adverse comments from many different GTI owners, Wolfsburg had (supposedly) stopped fitting the SportMaxx.

Just wait until you have worn just 2mm from the tread, still leaving 5mm - that is when you will start suffering horrendous aquaplaning.  Look at the outer tread blocks, next to the outermost longitudinal grooves.  You will see the reinforcing ridge which closes off the outer tread blocks at 5mm.  Interestingly, Dunlops own website: http://www.dunloptyres.co.uk/ourTyres/car/searchResults/SPSportMaxx/# actually shows the water dispersal from being blocked out to the sides, or outer edges of the tyre (the pic immediately above the size table, with the yellow water in the tread grooves).  They even call it "Twin Hydro-Paddle - The directional tread pattern quickly drains and disperses water from both sides of the tread."  WTF, on directional tyres, the water is supposed to drain from the centre > outwards!!!!!! - NOT blocking the side outlets like on the SportMaxx

Even in the dry, they are awful.  They struggle with straight line traction and braking, and in the corners (hard cornering) they are downright scary - very twitchy, and brake away with no warning, and no controlled sliding.

You certainly won't need to take any Senokot with these tyres!

I am actually trying v.hard to wear them out, because they really do let down the handling of the GTI.  I had the fortune to test drive 4 different GTIs, before I purchased mine.  I took one of the testers on a "private" facility, which had a specific handling section, and the balance was absolutely suberb.  Even Mrs Tamer had a go, and got some controllable slides, and said how easy it was to drive on the limit.

All four different GTIs had different boots, but none had Dunlops, and that has been my major gripe, stating to the stealer that the inital fleet of demo GTIs were heavily marketed on their superb on-the-limit handling.  The SportMaxxs' really lower the handling capabilities.

As final comparison, last week, the GTI was at a different stealer for some warranty work.  They gave me a Touran (as it was very short notice).  The Touran was a diesel, fitted with Michelin Energy E3A boots (the lowest tyre in the Michelin range), and outhandled (in terms of tyre feedback, and on-the-limit handling) my GTI.

No, the SportMaxx really are awful, many peeps slate the Conti SportContact2s, but they are a quantum leap better than the Dunlops.  IMVHO, the absolute ultimate tyre for the GTI would be the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.  In joint runner-up slot, that would be shared with the Conti SportContact2 and the Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2.

I do go on - don't I . . .

Cheers Ollie - think i'll give it a try. Do you have any pics? How about tips? Is it easy to cut to size? Did you get the bonnet or bumper kit, or both? Sorry for the stack of questions!

Just picked mine up tonight, and WHAT a car. ok I haven't been above 3500 rpm but what a car.

For comparison my friend took me to the dealers in his anniversary edition Type R (05) plate. My first time in a type R and that is amazing. It kicks in at 6500 rpm and just keeps going and going! However HOW noisy and HOW twitchy in the road. Getting out of that and (after paying my money for the car) driving my shiny new car was like getting out of an old 1978 mini and into a Rolls Royce!

The ED30 was a pleasure to drive home, with a subtle growl from the exhaust and a pleasing Turbo whistle through the gears.

Great around the town and EVER so easy to drive and a plesure to drive down the M61 home. (yes the M61 is a pleasure at last!)

When I got to the dealer, they'd also had delivered a Red 3 door ED30. I must honestly say for me, the Black 5 Door was the right choice, it looks soooo much better in the flesh and the wheels don't look too small. What a great finish the pearl black is too, set off with the tinted rear windows. Don't get me wrong, the 3 door looked good but that seat is awful to let people in the back!

So far (only 25 miles on the clock!!) I can't stop smiling and I can't comment on the Dunlops (yup fitted to mine too!)

To all those that are waiting.... you WON'T be dissapointed

25 miles?!  Mine's got 66 miles and it only did a trip from the dealers to my place - and back again - on Saturday and has been in the garage since.  I have just spent 5 exhausting hours polishing out the hologram blemishes in the paintwork using Zymol's wax cleaner 'made from natural ingredients' - the dealer offered to have them polished out and I politely declined.. from what I have heard they would have probably made it worse.  I then applied the Autoglym lifeshine package painstakingly.  Tomorrow it will get a ayer of wax and wait until I can afford some decent stonechip protection and the personalised plate.

Oh, yanks . . . we all know how trustworthy and reliable they are!  (would you trust "George dubya"?).

Two, nay, three crucial points that stick out.  Firstly, it seems quite clear there is a Dunlop employee amongst that lot (hint: look for the "duplicate posts").  Secondly, no one has compared with the Mich Pilot Sport PS2, they were all against the original Pilot Sport (which was directional).  Thirdly, there is no side-by-side comparison of new tyres!  It should be pretty obvious that any new tyre will be better than a shagged out worn tyre!

It seems they don't like the Goodyear F1 GS-D3s either!

What is really alarming about these SportMaxxs, and it keeps cropping up everywhere, is they will deform and "flat-spot" when been left standing - absolutely incredible that a tyre (presumable pumped to the correct inflation pressure) is unable to support the static mass of the vehicle.  Just think how the tyre then reacts to the much greater dynamic forces!

Trouble is, different roads, temperatures, weather conditions, etc in the USA

Exactly, and they don't do bends in the US of A

At the end of the day, the yanks have a very different mentality.  Spoon feed them advertising, and they believe it as Gospel truth.  Give them VAG 1.8 turbo petrol engines, designed to run on high quality fully synthetic oil for 10k miles, yet they know best, drain them, refil with cheap crap mineral oil (but hey, it's OK because we change our oil every 3000 miles max), then they wonder why they get engine failure due to sludging issues from oil breakdown!

I'll go for my medication now!

Another link for tyre tests - this one is from the Canadian Car and Driver mag, and more importantly, covers back-to-back testing of brand new tyres.

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=10252

Don't forget though, tyres can vary in their consistency of performance, as the tyre wears.  Should a certain tyre come top of the pile when brand new with 7½mm of tread - it doesn't mean it will still be at the top of the pile when half worn to say 3½mm of tread.  It is this point which directional tyres really suffer in the wet, yet assymetric tyres are able to maintain a reasonable level of consistency.

The only true tyre tests, which include testing new and worn tyres is found in Which reports.  However, they tend to concentrate on skinny boots for Kia Pride and the like, and place greater emphasis on cost (weather their pensionable readers can save an extra 50 pence for the electricity meter  ).
