Rang my dealer today to confirm receipt of my insurance cover note.  I also thought I'd ask him what the total was - I already knew as i 'd calculated it 2-3 times before, that it was £26,300 or thereabouts - and I got the shock of my life when he said it was £27,700    That price included GAP insurance at £390 which I have now dropped - going to an independent broker and getting it a lot cheaper.  I went to see him in the showroom and sat down to have a look at the options and car tally and noticed straight away that they had charged me £1050 for the winter pack in conjunction with xenons - but xenons were also listed at £638.30 ex. VAT.  I pointed this out and he realised the mistake and we spent about 30 minutes trying to produce another invoice which in the end was a fudged result as he couldn't take the option out of the system.  He then added winter pack at £310 until I pointed out to him that this was for heated seats – a standard Edition 30 spec – so then he thought it must be the £225 option which included headlight washers until I told him that this was part of xenon package. He then realised it was the £205 winter pack that I should be charged for. IÂ’m not criticising the salesman as I have known him for a year now and heÂ’s a sound guy – just that the VW options list and ordering system is so confusing. Anyway, he gave me a new figure of £26395 which I thought was still a bit too high but didn't say anything as I didnÂ’t want to sit there for the next hour sorting the mess out.  So I've brought the invoice home and checked it and found the following:

1.  My order is meant to be price protected as I ordered the Edition 30 last October and this was confirmed by my salesman.  So having gone through the list of options I found that this wasn't the case.

2.  I amended the figures and adding up all the options I have paid for, the figures still don't add up and I am about £100 out of pocket?!  I have ordered the following options:

Pearl Paint - £310.64                                                   (£365 incl VAT)
DVD/Sat-nav - £1570.21                                            (£1845 incl VAT)
Multifunction steering wheel - £314.89                      (£370 incl VAT)
Xenons - £638.30                                                        (£750 incl VAT)
Luxury Pack 2 - £153.19                                             (£180 incl VAT)
Cruise Control - £229.79                                             (£270 incl VAT)
Rear Tinted glass - £148.94                                         (£175 incl VAT)
Winter Pack - £174.47                                                 (£205 incl VAT)

Total  = £3540.43 exl VAT
              £4160 incl VAT

The prices are NOT price protected for the paint which should be £335, the MF steering wheel which should be £350, the xenons which  should be £725, the rear tinted glass which should be £165. Whats going on?!

Luxury Pack 2 is a strange one as it is not listed as an available option on the Volkswagen website, but is in the Golf brochure but only for cars in stock after 5th Feb 2007 - does that mean build date or what?  In any case, the difference between the two is that I should have an automatic dimming driverÂ’s door mirror which I will check for when I collect the car. Anyone have an idea as to what that is and how you check whether you have one?

The car should add up to £22295 OTR as this is the price in the Golf brochureÂ… but it doesnÂ’t.  The price they have charged me is:

Basic Price £18371.91
First Registration Fee £38
Reflective Number Plates £20
Factory Delivery Charges - £388.51
Euro Plate Upgrade £4.25
Road Tax for 12 months £190

Total excl VAT = £19012.67

Total incl VAT = £22339.89

A difference of £44.89?!

I can see what they have doneÂ… in the Golf brochure, the VAT is not added on the road tax and first reg fee but they have put it on top?!

To top it up theyÂ’ve given me a discount of £55.31 excl VAT on the basic price of £18371.91 which would make the OTR price £22230 – was that the original announced price of the Edition 30 in October?  If not whats that aboutÂ… Even with the ‘discountÂ’ IÂ’m still short changedÂ…  Looks like a visit to the stealer is in order.

You kind of lost me in there, but I can tell you that there is no VAT on road tax.

Also, i ordered my GTi before the price hike and am paying the old prices.

Plus, VW screwed up my bill too, but I ended up an extra £95 in pocket! Sorry dude....

I agree, the system VW use to generate the invoices is very confusing.  When initially ordering my Ed30 I checked the price on the invoice against what I calculated and found a difference of £365.  It was only after some serious scrutinizing of the invoice that myself and the salesman noticed that I had been charged twice for metallic paint.  This was because the saleman had chosen the paint as an option then selected Reflex Silver, which automatically adds the met paint price too.  Its a good job that I checked what I should have been paying, but it shows that there is a problem with VWs system and you should go through it with a fine tooth comb.

Its ridiculous that VW can't design a system that clearly and transparently calculates and shows the car price.  I wonder how many others have been fleeced like this?

Does anyone have a link to the prices that were in effect before the changes? Ordered mine and paid a deposit in November, but dealer has been a little reluctant to give a final price in recent calls. Don't really expect that he's trying to shaft me, but would like to go in armed with an idea in my head of what it should be.

Out of interest, I'm assuming that having paid a deposit last November I'm price protected? Nothing was said about it, but I'm assuming so. Legally I;m sure it should, but price changes may be incorporated into the contract to over ride this.

I asked for another copy of the order yesterday to confirm that we would still be paying the pre price rise prices.

It all seemed to tally, but I still would like to see a pre-price rise price list and options just to check.

I pointed this confussion to Mylton Keynes at the end of last year wrt heated seats / winter pack as, and as is the case, heated seats come standard with the ed 30. They never worked it out and it took me to show the sales man in person that what they did was cut and paste the normal GTI extras to the ed. 30 with making now allowances for the latter models standard spec - hence the confusion!

I paid £200 for the winter pack, in conjunction with Xennons, headlight washers and leather seats.

Which when I think about it, is £200 for a low fluid washer level light

I just paid for my car today, and having studied the invoice against the price list on the vw website,  found that all my extras had been charged at the rate before the price hike.  Even the options that I added just before my car was built (week 4), were charged at the lower rate, these were tinted windows, highline, xenons.  Looks like I did ok if they are stinging some of you at the new rate!!
