OIL for 8V GTI/ Valve Stem
« on: 20 February 2007, 21:23 »
Hi guys just wondered what oil to put into my 1991 8v gti. Its done 140,000 now and is currently running on duckhams 10-40 semi sythetic.

The engine does use oil around 1 litre to every 1.5-2k miles. I think the valve stem oil seals are maybe showing signs of wear.

Anyway the car is being serviced on thursday and I am wanting to try a different oil. I was thinkiing along the lines of castrol gtx magnatex 15-40. I heard the vw stuff is pretty good as well but I was thinking that 10-40 maybe a little thin if the car is using oil.

I have also just started to notice shades of blue smoke emitting from the exhaust when the engine is reved when cold. Could this be serious?

Cheers

sounds like valve stem seals

I don't think a semi will give the same results

There might be an additive to help old seals? otherwise I use cheap halfords oil.... well she drinks so much  ! Seems a waste of money to put the good stuff in, I'll put that in after the rebuild! Not long now!

I buy Vauxhall's Semi Synth 10w40.  Mainly as I have a trade account at Vauxhall and the oil only costs me £8 as opposed to Halford own which costs nearer £20

would anyone recommend putting 15-40 in opposed to 10-40?

I use the Synta Silver (VAG stuff) religiously.  Good value from GSF and also a genuine filter with the non-return valve in it.

Does sound as though the oil seals may be on the way- not a huge job but worth doing.

No, i tried it, no difference. The 40 is the viscosity anyways so you would need a 10/50 or 15/50 if you wanted to try a thicker oil.
