hi there can anyone give me a bit of advice?
i have a mk2 gti 8 valve but very soon i think its going to die so i'm thinking about getting a new engine. was thinking of getting a 16v 1.8 or 2.0 for it because i would prefer a bit more oomph if you know what i mean. is it just a simple swap or is therer any tricky business envolved? hope someone can help, thanks.

to convert to a 16v isn't too hard as long as you have the right age 8v and pick the right donor engine. basiclly they had two different 8v's. digifant and k-jet. k-jet 8v to k-jet 16v is the easiest swap but that depends on the type of engine you currently have.
do a search in the mk2 section as there is looooads of info about all manner of engine swaps. ultimately it all boils down to your competance as a mechanic (or whoever would do the swap), how much money you want to spend and what you ultimately want to achieve.
there is an old saying, "don't build a car you can buy".... ie there are loads of 16v mk2's out there so unless you've spent a load of time and money on the rest of the car it might be better for you to just sell the 8v and buy a 16v. remember its not just a case of taking one engine out and putting the other in, think of brakes and other worthwhile upgrades.
