Clutch grinding noise
« on: 05 February 2007, 00:16 »
Well the 2L pb digi is up and running fine now after some timing troubles . But as 1 problem is solved, another arises .
When i did the conversion in my caddy, i fitted a new clutch and used a 5 speed diesel gearbox. I press down on the clutch pedal to here a grinding type of noise. Has anyone came accross this prob before?
I'am positive that i fitted everything correctly so its left me scratching my head plus i'am gutted i cant go for a spin just yet.
Please could someone shed some light on the matter.

sounds like it could be the release bearing, does the car actually move?
Edit: What clutch kit did you buy for it?

This sounds familir to when we used a 2litre clutch on a 1.6 box and the splines hole was to big so it just spun freely causing a grinding noise. Sure you got the correct clutch??

I used a valeo 200mm clutch mated to a mk3 gti flywheel. The flywheel happens to be the same as the old 1.6 carb engine i took out.

Hmm, the clutch should be a 210mm one ideally, I don't think 200 would be man enough?  In fact, I don't think there is a 200mm fitment MK2 clutch?
Edit: Ah its a diesel clutch!  In that case it should be fine, perhaps you've fitted it on the wrong way round?  Can you select gears with the engine on and drive the car?

Prob is 210mm as it fit nice in the mk3 gti flywheel. I've fitted it the right way. I can select all gears now with engine off but dont fancy trying it with engine on due to the clutch noise.

any idea what model clutch it was specifically, as said if its a MK3 gti 8v or MK2 16v clutch it wont work with the gearbox you're using.

It was for mk3 gti 2L 8v and a seat model, prob ibiza. Whats the difference then? Would fitting a mk3 gti box help?

aha theres the issue, the splined hole in the middle of the 8v clutch disc is too big for the gearbox, you need to either fit a MK2 8v GTI friction disc, or a MK3 2.0 8v or MK2 16v gearbox :)
