I think some interesting points have been made but in my eyes the 80's were the golden years for VW, they were leagues above other manufacturers and when the competition got a little hotter they just bought out a faster model.

The GTI golf ruled the roost and every other manufacturer copied the idea blatantly, but the vw products were still head and shoulders above the rest.

Also its good to note that you say you wouldn't own a MK1/MK2 golf and that you yourself own a MK3 8 valve which is probably the least deserving of all GTI's to wear the "GTI" badge.

Driving for me isnt about Getting from A-B in the quickest time as I pretty much doubt I would have a licence at the end of the week if I did drive that like. Its about my car having a character, It sometimes acts up, rattles a bit but then if it didnt, I would have nothing to do on a sunday when the sun is out.

I understand your views but I think they are a bit blinkered as its the MK1 and MK2 that made the GTI image what is is today.

Although Ive got a newer dub, I would like to think that I will always have a bit of 'old skool' waiting in the wings for me. Nothing like going out for a blast in the mk2 on a hot sunny day :D:D
