Golf 1.6 wierd start when it's cold
« on: 19 January 2007, 17:33 »
OK, first I want to say hello to everybody, and such a nice site you have.
Recently, I  got my first car, a VW Golf 2 1.6 (regular, not diesel), and since I'm 16 years old, I need some help.

The car itself is running great, I just don't have money to invest in it, since I'm 16 and living in Serbia .
I only have one minor problem.
When It's cold, like below 5C, when I start the car it struggles (don't know really how to explain that), like it doesn't have enough air or something. It sounds like It's working on 3 cylinders, and clearly doesn't have all the power it should have.
That lasts for 1 minute, top, and than stops and engine starts running completely normal.

One more thing. When shut down the engine, and it cools down, after 4 hours it doesn't happen again. It only happens when I turn the engine on after a long period (1 day for example), and when it's cold outside.

Anybody?

Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about too. Well, ofcourse that the carburator is cold, but this shouldn't happen?

I think your car is suffering from carburettor icing. This is where ice forms in or around the carb. This is normally fixed by having a warm air feed for when the carb is cold.

On 1.3s there is a warm air feed from the heat shield of the exhaust manifold to the air filter housing. In the air feed housing there is a temperature sensor which opens and closes to allow warm air in when the carb is cold and closes once the carburettor has warmmed up.

I don't know whether 1.6's have a warm air feed?

Icing on temperatures about 2-5C?

I am not quite shure, but I think there is a system that does what you said.
There is a little tube that goes all way from around the carburettor to the beginning of the air intake system. The tube itself makes a vacuum and closes the cold air intake with a flap. Is that what you were talking about?

It doesn't have to be cold for carb icing to occur. It occurs more when there is moisture in the air and can happen at a range of temperatures. Do a search.

Thanks, I searched and found out much about carb icing.
What do you guys think, what should be my first step in solving this problem?

Does your engine have a warm air feed from the exhaust manifold to the air box Posting a picture of the engine and airbox will help

Here is a pic...
It's not my car, but mine looks exactly the same. I don't have the air box (is that the name for that "box" at the begining of the air intake system) too.
