I have modifried the picture with arrows and text box. Does your car have the hot air intake?

Quote
There is a little tube that goes all way from around the carburettor to the beginning of the air intake system. The tube itself makes a vacuum and closes the cold air intake with a flap. Is that what you were talking about?

That tube goes to the heat sensor in the airbox which controls the vacuum diaphragm assembly.

It's not my car, but mine looks exactly the same. I don't have the air box (is that the name for that "box" at the begining of the air intake system) too.

Are you talking about the vacuum diapragm assembly or the air box?

Thanks a lot, man.
I understood everything you marked on the picture.
I have the hot air intake, and the vacuum flap works fine. It closes when I start the engine, but I still have the problem of engine struglleing at ~500rpm, sometimes less.

I think your car is suffering from carburettor icing. This is where ice forms in or around the carb. This is normally fixed by having a warm air feed for when the carb is cold.

On 1.3s there is a warm air feed from the heat shield of the exhaust manifold to the air filter housing. In the air feed housing there is a temperature sensor which opens and closes to allow warm air in when the carb is cold and closes once the carburettor has warmmed up.

I don't know whether 1.6's have a warm air feed?

Wont be carb icing, as it is happening straight away after a cold start :)

Icing on temperatures about 2-5C?

I am not quite shure, but I think there is a system that does what you said.

Doesn't have to be below freezing for carb icing to happen, in fact its more likly to happen when it is moist out (more water in the air to freeze)  The temp drop inside the carb can be as much as 30 degrees!

It sounds to me like the car has a problem with the autochoke system, read thru my 2e2 FAQ. Check the temp sender, coolant channel o'ring & 3/4 point unit sections :)

Solving this problem is put on stand by because weather is really, really nice and the problem didn't occur any more :)

Anyway, I don't want to open a new theme, I just want to ask a couple of things.
1)Can I smoke the tail lights myself, without buying new ones?
2)Can I paint rims with spray paint?
3)Can I allign rear wiper to be horizantal when not working, or is it custom part?
4)Can I make badgeless grill myself?

1. Yeah but they wont look as good as genuine 16v lights ;)
2. If you take your time with the prep, they should turn out good :)
3. Yes, check out the guide in the mk2 maintenance + info section
4. Its doable, you have tyo chop out the badge then glue in a section from another grill, hard work to make it look good!

About my primary problem, I have located the component that needs to be fixed/replaced.
It's the automatic choke on the right side of carb. The spring in it that controls the air intake flap is not reacting quickly enough and the carb doesn't have enough air. I will try to repair it, but if it's broken for real, than I shall replace it.

One more thing. Since my Golf is one of the first MK2s it has rear view mirrors like this:

Is it possible to change them to this, without replacing the whole doors?

No, actually, I still haven't solved the problem.
It just got worse.
Now It's struglleing in almost all temperatures when the engine is cold, and not for a couple of seconds, but for a couple of minutes.
I think my 2E2 is going to a professional for a full repair.
