MK2 16v clutch popped
« on: 16 January 2007, 13:24 »
Hey all,

I have a 1988 MK2 16v, i got in it the other day, started it fine and when i put my fut on the clutch there was a popping/snapping sound and the pedal went to the floor.
I thought it was the clutch cable but after inspecting it, it was all fine.
The nice man from the RAC who towed me home said there was a link between the lever arm and the clutch which has gone and i need a whole new clutch?

From what you've read does anyone know what is wrong and which bits i need, and in fact whether i need a whole new clutch?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

The pushrod in the gearbox may have gone through the packing plate on the pressure plate.
Time to renew the whole clutch if that is the case.

Before you do anything else, remove the green end cap and check the clutch actuation finger, it may be cracked.  Jack it up a little on the passenger side, otherwise you'll loose a bit of box oil.  Have a new green end cap & release bearing ready, cheap from GSF.  If the finger looks ok, its a box off job as the release plate thing has prob gone as mister audi100 says.

In this case dont bother fitting the new cap & bearing, just put the old one in for now, becasue it makes it alot easer to replace the pushrod bush & seal if you tap it out from behind, I pushed summat long & thin into the pushrod hole, small enough to fit down the hole, but large enough to hit the pushrod bush.  Then I slid the pushrod down after it and gently tapped the bush out :)
Don't forget to replace the input shaft seal as well.

If all that sounds like a foreign language, have a read through of this:
