Hi Guys

Well i'm back in another Mk2 Golf, another 8v, you gotta love them!

Need to replace the power steering pump, I have a second hand one to replace my very noisey one with, any tips on changing one, and what power steering fluid do i use, i understand its not a standard fluid its a special one from VW, and i right?

Been told to jack the front of the car up to move wheels left to right to get rid of any trapped air...

Its good to be back!

Cheers

Knobby!

Keep the link below in your favourites knobby. (It's great for reference)

http://www.iol.ie/~kilkennyhockey//BentleyManual/

This is the page you want for the brake fluid part no & how to drain & refill.

http://www.iol.ie/~kilkennyhockey//BentleyManual/SU01/ch7.3.1.html

But I would imagine that most good oil/lubricant manufacturer of brake fluid with the same viscosity
will be as good. I think Oilman (Member name?) has put a comprehensive write up somewhere here, of
oils and their meaning, and has a list of the most highly recommended.

For a MK2 system the correct fluid is Dexron II ATF fluid, aka Automatic Gearbox oil :)

Been to a VW stealer this afternoon, picked up two bottle of their finest pas fluid. I was told i should empty the system and refil with new fluid. Would anyone recommend i flush the system before putting new fluid in and if so what flush?

Cheers

id put in 2 litres of cheap atf, run it for 5 mins & bleed then drain again, that should get the worst of the crud out.  Be aware that if the VW stuff isn't ATF it may leak past the PAS system seals, the newer PAS fluid is a bit thinner IIRC.  Also it may make the pump sound noisy!

I was told by the VW man its the same stuff they use across the board, was he wrong then.. Cos i went down my local automotive place and he told me it was special VW stuff. I dont want a noisey pump, thats why i am changing it in the first place.

The guy who told me it was Dexron II was Golden off ClubGTI, who used to work for VAG :)
What does it say on the bottle?

yeah the II means dexron II, not I or III. Or IV, or V or XXXXIIIVIIIVIVIIVIVI
