What carbs?
« on: 18 December 2006, 12:37 »
Hi, I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who has recently purchased a Mk2 golf 1.6 driver.  He wants to put new carbs on it.  So I'd be grateful for any help that i can get.  Need to know what carbs to put on it and where to get them from and roughly how much they'll cost.

Thanks,
Ben

Use bike carbs - they hardly need any maintenance, easy to set up, produce better power and a better spread of power because there's choke per cylinder.

Or twin 40s (Webber, Dellorto) just the same as above but apparently they produce more power - but also use more fuel.

Fail that just go for the Webber replacement (single) carb which will fit strait onto your mainfold.

I got a set of twin 40's a while back that i paid £200 for, plus then you need the inlet manifold, the linkage if you havent got that and the of course air filters for them aswell, not cheap!

plus they are a pig to maintain and would use more fuel than the QE2.

ok its not cheap , you'll need a good £800 at least , also to set up takes a lil work , also you need to bypass the fuel pump im not sure on golfs but id imagine you just remove the one underneath and use a hose in place , the one in the tank would need a similar mod as my 205 had , which was to remove and replace with a pick up pipe of similar length , you then install the facet fuel pump as near to the carbs as posible (the space where the air box went is ideal.
you need 2xweber or delorto 40 carbs , a inlet manifold , a facet fuel pump , a fuel regulator/filter , fuel piping and union connectors , a small filter for the breather and two large filters for the carbs. also if you buy them brand new or second hand there gonna need to have the right idle and main jets  also venturis need to be the right size. this is what cost me the most to get right , i spent a fortune rolling roading it , changing jets till i got the best performance. it spent the whole day at a weber specialist , which aint cheap!. is it worth it? , yes! , my 205 on twin webers was a arse ripping laugh , it never failed to make me smile when i heard those carbs roar , its worth having a race head built for them btw , i had a 275 cam and a gasflowed/skimmed n port enlarged head. my low to mid range was scary. 6 sec 0-60's were no probs , fuel wasnt all that bad either :) , only prob with the golf is its inlet manifold is on the back . imo 205's are much better suited to carbs because of there orientation.

Not worth doing anything other than fitting a Weber 32/34 DMTL, get one on ebay and a GTi cam, it'll run nicely, and keep the std airbox as the weber suffers from carb icing if you don't. The DMTL is good to fuel up to 150bhp. The DCOEs (twin 40s) are only any use if you've done some serious work on the engine, on a std Driver a complete waste of time.

I got me a set of dellorto 45’s for £120 (going rate) around a month ago, serviced them (£20) got a second hand filterking filter + regulator + facet red top pump, all mounted on a all in one fabricated bracket for £120 from turbosport. The manifold and any other accessories you could wish for can be obtained from http://www.racecar.co.uk/dellorto/.

Where do you live as thereÂ’s a few cracking carb tuner around the south east that are reasonably priced?

Do it you wonÂ’t regret it!
