I said a DMTL will fuel up to 150bhp, so you could tune the bejezuz out of a 1.6 and not need anything bigger or more complex than a DMTL. And to get 150bhp out of 1.6 Driver would cost an eye popping amount of money. The point is you'll get around 80-85bhp on a 1.6 Driver with a Gti cam and exhaust and the DMTL. If you fitted DCOEs (pair of Twin choke side draughts) or Dellorto equiv onto an otherwise std Driver you'd probably succeed in slowing it down and half your mpg into the bargain. Twin chokes are designed to work well with high reving tuned motors. With a lot of work you could possibly detune them so a std motor would run okay but you'd go no quicker and still suffer in the mpg stakes.

I got 106bhp @ 6300rpm out of my old driver with cams, standard carb (with bespoke air intake), advanced ignition timing and no other real modifications, just correct set up. So there is scope for these engines.

I would say go with the DMTL as it's easier and cheaper but there is alot to be said about having a choke per cylinder and if your serious then twin 40's or bike carbs are the way foward.

Mine cant be standard then if 80-85bhp is available through adding an exhaust and gti cam as i took the car down a runway against a Saxo VTR 98bhp model, i had a bad start spinnin but once i got traction i pulled on him.The Saxo surely weighs less than the mk2???

Not a lot of differance - Saxo is 1996lb and the Mk2 1918lb. I wouldn't put to much on one run, in std form the Saxo hits 60 in 9.3 and the Golf in 10.9.

mark 2 1.6 drivers are 75ps, and putting a GTI cam would be quite benefitial too. Would pull a little bit better and have more puff higher up the revs.
