Servicing on MK4 1.8 T GTi
« on: 24 November 2006, 15:26 »
Hi all,
I got a this car a few months back and I have a 2000mile service light pop up on the dash so ive just called my local dealer for a quote on a service and im a little shocked at the price :(

Its mileage is 66,000. The guy quoted me £230 for a 60k service and also asked if I have had the cambelt done. According to my history it doesnÂ’t look like it has so I said no. I then asked how much is it to do, as he strongly suggested I get it done and he said £410 off the top of his head!!!

Thinking out loud I said f**king ell £640 for a service and he turned to me and said well I can do a little discount if you have both done.

Was I being completely naive when I thought a VW service would be about £150-£200 per year when I bought this car? And do these prices reflect the norm for this work?

Any advice comments welcome: D

I got quoted £342 for my cambelt but any good garage can do it or why don't you try a skoda dealer to see if it is any cheaper. They like to charge though and 200 for a service is about right. I also got quoted £191 for back discs and pads changing which is very expensive for a 1 hour easy job with parts only coming in at about £45. VW are asking to change the cambelts earlier nowadays and I think its 60000 miles. I thought it used to be 120k but that is Kilometres not miles. I think.
I have just discovered a brilliant garage in  Morley in Leeds called Chippendales and he has all the software as well.

Main dealer prices are scary, but they have tp pay for the large fancy showrooms somehow.

I also have a Discovery TD5, and phoned the Landrover dealer for a quote when it was due it first service in my ownership - reply was between £500 and £700 and thats without any cambelt change (its a chain drive) just the usual oils and filters, check brakes etc. Total rip off, needless to say I didn't take them up on their kind offer  Instead I got the Landrover workshop manual from ebay, printed off the official service schedule and now always service it myself following the procedures in the manual which is very detailed, but all straightforward stuff.

Bad luck, mate.  Yeah, £200 is about right for the major service.  I think it goes:-

10k oil service
20k oil service
30k major service
40k oil service
50k oil service
60k major service

and so on.....

I was quoted 60k/6 years (whichever comes first) for the cambelt/tensioners/water pump.  (If you don't, then you could bend some valves if any of those parts let go.  £350 is the ballpark figure to get the cambelt kit done.

I got my cambelt changed at PSI Tuning in Stoke.
They also changed the water pump and tensioners. All inclusive for £285

For my car which is 2004 MK4 Golf Gti turbo, I have to have the cambelt done at 60k or 4 years, whichever is first.
£230 for a 60k service is not a bad price I don't think!?

VW are a rip off, ask around and see what people recommend in terms of a small local guy.  They have to work to get their reputatation and usually deserve it, if you see a few quality motors in the place so much the better.  I had a small local garage do my services etc and they charged about £200 and that was including replacing the rear axle bushes, oil and all filters etc.  To replace rear discs and pads was £130 but the best part was that when I took the car to VW to get a quote they told me the caliper was duff and needed replaced - estimate £400.  These guys stripped the caliper down and rebuilt it for a fraction of the cost.  James Cooper Motor Engineers for anyone in Aberdeen.

Beware any garage that looks more like a hairdressers than a workshop.

I had my cambelt done for £170 which included labour, vat and the cambelt kit, i also bought the waterpump with the metal impellor for £25 from GSF (no extra labour charge). I dont think vw are worth the reputation just depends whether or not you want the pretty stamp in your service book.

While with its previous (1st) owner, my car was looked after by the VW dealer. It came with a detailed history so I know what was done.

A few weeks before I bought the car, it was into the dealer to have the famous leaking rear washer fixed. Not long after buying I noticed the boot light was not working so I took of the trim and found the washer to be leaking - now fixed properly using quality non VW parts!

2 days before buying the car, it was MOT'd by the dealer, the rear exhaust hanger had to be re-welded to the back box to pass. Within a week of having the car, I discovered the weld to have failed. Re-welded it myself (in March) and still going strong.

There was mention on an invoice of fixing a rattle in the dash by placing felt strips in the gap - panel below steering wheel next to centre console. This has played up for months so I removed to panel to investigate. 2 screws were missing including 1 important one holding the inner panel mount to the console and the plastic outer panel was cracked around a screw hole. No wonder it rattled with that standard of workmanship, probably came out worse than when it went in. (at least the felt strips were there!)

Very poor from people you would expect to be the best.
