Another "COMMON" mk3 Problem???????
« on: 15 November 2006, 03:04 »
Is this mk3 GTi really worth all this effort??????

I would really like to get someones opinions on this car of mine.......

The car makes a "whirring" noise when driving.. ( obviously when i floor it, cant hear Sheit over the induction kit but thats beside the point  ) this noise becomes more noticable when i rest my foot on the clutch ( a bad habit but i know loads of people who do the same ) DO I NEED A NEW GEARBOX??????

Another problem ive recently picked up is a strange problem with my headlights?!?  Ive been to an auto electrician who says that his seen this before and its a COMMON problem with the mk3's????  also conveniently enough wouldnt tell me what the problem was until i paid him the £125 to fix the damn thing!!
So, i cant afford that at the moment so seen as he said its a common problem i was just wondering if anyone on here has had the same sheit?

Problem is this.......  only my park lights come on when i turn the headlight switch over??  WEIRD thing is this.........  when i turn my demister on.....  MY HEADLIGHTS COME ON?!?!?!?  so i turned my headlights off keeping the demister on and WHAM.... the headlights stay on? Now ive read here before about the headlight switches buggering out on the mk3 golfs.... but this is now my 3rd one and is just starting to p1ss me off a bit! When putting in the new switches in, everything works fine for a short while ( about a week or so ). one strange thing though is that when i put in these "new" switches onto the Dipped beam position, all the way to the right...... it now switches the Demister on?

Im going absolutely MentaL          PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Chris

have a look in the engine bay, and find the dim dip resistor if you can.  Its the size & shape of a pack of sparties, with a yellow wire coming out of each end (at least it is on a MK2 anyway)

Follow the wires up and disconnect the plug, you'll probvably find it in front/under the airbox.  If that don't fix it replace the switch, and maybe the next one wont melt ;)

Isn't the clutch bearing on these car's just under the clutch arm and not in the middle of the clutch like most car's?? and normally plastic? Very easy fix

indeed, don't need to have the clutch out to do it.

Thanks for all the input guys.....

Does anyone know where the Demister relay could be found? I've checked out my Haynes but cant find anything?  Still struggling away with this headlights problem too.....

and cant find the "smartie" box with 2 yellow wires that I was told about earlier?

There isn't a relay for the rear screen demister.
I don't know where the dim dip relay is on a MK3 then?  Perhaps some one else can shed some light :)

Have you taken a look at the wires behind the demister switch and everything else? If the looms been butchered then you'll have to un-butcher it. Might be worthwhile checking the loom behind the headlight switch.
