Indeed,, i have checked the immediate wires behind both the demister and also the headlight switch itself. Still  fooked....  even if i take the headlight switch completely out, i can still use the demister to switch on the normal beams...... and i can keep the high beams on by flicking the usual arm.... even with no headlight switch attached?

The lights situation sounds  But certainly not a common problem cos you'd see it crop up all the time on the boards like the the relays, lecy windows, gearbox, ect ect!!!

I just had to have a recon box fitted and it cost me £500 with new clutch and cable.  But mine was well fooked!!!!!!  It blew a hole in the side of the box and left me stranded waiting for the AA for 3 fookin hours    Why oh why are the boxes on VW's so crap????   I had one go big time when i had my T25 also

Well going back to the start of the thread, you said the auto electrician knew what it was as it's a common problem. nope. the only thing I can think of that might cause anything remotely like that is poor earthing, but that's usually the rear lights. Have you checked all visible wires from headlights/indicators/fogs for any signs of wear/shorts.

Do you have haynes? Apologies if you've already done this, but I'd check the wires of all of the plugs to make sure the correct colour wires are in the correct pins, and pushed in completely to make contact. Failing that and you've ruled everything else out, I'd start stripping out the trim covers get a multimeter and start checking where each wire connects to.

Saying that £125 to do that isn't so bad. If the auto-electrican has diagnosed it correctly.

SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Another "COMMON" mk3 Problem???????

WELL well well.............  just as my patience was running out!!!!  Its all been sorted!!

Yeah, not so sure about my mechanic and his DODGY auto elec friends diagnosis of "oh, its a common MK3 electrical problem!"

MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This just looks so extremely messed up to me.........   So, i was digging around behind the fuse box trying to check continuity and what not and was about to bypass  the fuse box altogether as a LAST RESORT Suggestion by my Auto elec brother back in South Africa.......  when i stumbled across this GREY\GREEN wire which runs from the back of the Demister switch and into the fuse/relay box, I noticed a strange wrapping of Grey insulation tape ( looked quite fresh  ) just before the wire hit the box.....  "someone" had connected another wire to this wire and then proceded to connect this to another point on the fuse box????  strange... i thought???!?!?  Lets see what it does!

Wire out & WHAM!!!!  Everything BACK TO NORMAL!!!!! no more problems with my headlights switching on my demister or vice versa!

Originally gave the car to the mechanic ( First time using this guy ) to fix up a ecu problem.... costed me £200.  Someone here think that this A$$ was trying to make some extra bucks off me???  this problem didnt exist before the Ecu was "FIXED"?

Oh,,,,,  and by the way.......   FYI.......  there is a relay for the demister.....  its relay 16 in the Haynes Manual.... otherwise known as the "X" contact relief relay ( well , it stops the demister switch working so Im presuming this is the B1tch i was originally looking for  )

Its not for the de-mister specifically, the x-over relay simply turns off all unneccesarry electrical items while the engine is turning on the starter, lights, heater blower etc.  So technically the x-over relay is the 'pretty much anything ignition live' relay I guess

Sounds like he was trying to scam you mate
