High revs ?

I guess this has been covered before but i cant seem to find anything i have a golf gti 16v 2l p reg and it revs high when i pull up to stop at traffic it sits dead on 1800 and stays there if i stay in one place for about three mins it will drop down to just under 1000 where it should be right.

Also when im driving around if i go to change gears the revs will stay high until i take my foot of the clutch so it the revs (needle) will only start to come back down when the gear has been engaged ? It does not sound right and was wanting to know what could cause this i cleaned my isv valve out also cleaned out the throttle housing and its had new spark plugs ? Another thing it also does when it feels like it  just revs its self so if i was at at about 1000 it would go up to about 1100 or 1200 then it will come back down and then just go up again .any ideas

Check all of your rubber breather hoses , you may have extra air coming into the system .

Their is kind of a hissing sound near the throttle housing bit near the front suspension bolt but i can find where its coming from and its their when the car is just idling

If its hissing sound then you've def got a loose/split pipe. Have a close look around the ait intake hose and where it connects to the throttle body, it should be pretty obvious. Also you can have car idling and just poke around or flex some tubes to see if hissing stops/gets worse.

right i shall have a look to see if  can find a leak the car will only rev high when its hot but when i start it up when im off to work it runs like a gem

Cant seem to trace the sound could it be possible that the air mass sensor is knacked ?

hi again just been looking into this over revving I'm getting in my golf gti 16v mk3 2l and so far i have read possible cause to be air mass meter, accelerator cable,o2 solenoid,blue temp sensor,throttle body microswitch,sticky throttle linkage or cable and the butterflies in the throttle body.

 This morning i went out to check i cant even hear the hissing sound any more so I'm now sure i dint have a air leak. When i looked at the accelerator cable i saw it was quit loose is this normal ? if any one can i would appreciate it if you could have a look at yours and see if its loose and see what ring its sitting on when i moved mine up it was on ring 5. Or if anyone this these are not the likely problems please just say and give me some ideas thanks

Could be wise getting the fault code's read (maybe someone on here has the correct reader?) as this will show a fault with the air mass meter if that's the problem!! And my cable dosen't seem to be loose and has 6 ring's showing (at the throttle body end) and 4 at the other

does anyone know how much the dealers would charge to read the faults ?.

Yea when i looked at my cable on the throttle housing i had 5 rings showing and i could push the cable down about an inch before it actually move the other end so i moved it right up and i can push it down about half an inch now ?
Need to get this revving sorted now cause its drinking alot. I put £20 on Saturday morning, I'm in the red on the fuel gauge and  Ive coverd about 80 miles the MFA says i doing about 21.1 mpg which is high right ? I'm not thrashing it either. Its really odd cause it only seems to do it when it gets warm or once the oil gets to about 68.

i was going to get a code reader once but just didn't get around to doing it someone who owns one should charge to get peoples codes cleared and stuff lol

Are you anywhere near Cambridge, I can read/clear fault codes.
