DSG and ROUNDABOUTS
« on: 05 November 2006, 08:53 »
Had another drive of the DSG GTI in an attempt to make up my mind.  The system really is great but I struggled with changing gear mid roundabout.  Thats because you have to take your right hand of the wheel where the upshift paddle is to turn.  Would like to know how u guys handle it.  I guess you just use the stick??

I think technically speaking, you shouldn't be changing gears mid corner, but it did seem weird not having the paddles attached to the wheel itself. Didn't like the lack of engine braking either.

I found this too and consequently this was my main reason in choosing a manual box.  I suppose these are the situations when it is best to use the fully automatic setting.

The manual box is superb, and coupled with the best 4 pot in the business, only good things can happen!

Try an advanced driving course - don't ever change in mid-corner, you will unbalance the car. Always brake in a straight line and change gear before any hazard. Repeat this mantra:

I - Information
P - Position
S - Speed
G - Gear
A - Accelerate

You obviously haven't driven around any large roudabouts then.  Assuming its too early to change into 2nd before you turn the wheel byy 1/4 that means according to you you have to keep it in 1st.  Don't think so.  Also at less than 20 miles an hour i don't think unsettling the car is an issue.  Hardly on the limit are you!!

I no DSG is faster and a lot less of a pain in traffic but really don't no if I'd buy a car with it again. Having test drive a few different car's over the last few weeks I think I'm beginning to miss the manual. Doc any luck in finding a heads up display?

Sure DSG has a few niggles or 'features' that can get you down. Sadly my car is getting a new front end  and I have a replacement car while its in. I have a Vauxhall/Opel Astra auto which has to be driven to be believed! Its comical, like they got a 3 year old to copy the DSG system. In full auto mode there is a time delay between gear changes of about 1.5 seconds! In both the 'manual' and auto modes the car lurches between each gear change making you feel sick.
If you need a laugh go and test drive one, and you'd never complain about DSG again!

ive used sh!troens dsg version, called the "sensodrive", fitted in my once owned c2 vtr, used paddles behind wheel, same as gti , and like the previous thread, the dsg system is the best by a country mile imo.horrid lurches, cant make its mind up what gear to select in slow moving traffic. i canot say a bad word against my dsg system, no going back to manual gearbox for me anymore!
