head units and cages n00b questions
« on: 31 October 2006, 22:41 »
sorry for asking what probably a really simple question but what do you need to install a single din head unit in a mk4 golf.

I'm picking mine up Thursday and want to order everything i need in order to install the new stereo saturday.

now with the mk4 being double din and the head unit i'll be getting alpine 9855 being single din what will i need to fit it.

obviously i'll need a iso converter / connector for it, a blanking plate but will i need a fascia and a cage to put the single din head unit in.

thanks

The dealership actually sells a pocket that will fit above (or below, depending on how you want it orientated) the head unit, is a bit more useful that just a blanking plate. - handy for your ipod/cd's/ciagrettes etc

Not sure how much they are, my dealer gave me mine for free. Call your local stealership and speak to parts dept....

i managed to lash the head unit in Saturday, but found out i'll need a iso connector, as its not getting power if the ignition is off so all the settings are being lost each time the engine is switched off.

i also had to remove the cd changer in order to make room for the wires, so think a pocket would be out of the question too due to space.

i just need to find that style but for the mk4 as that will give me the room to have the wires under the head unit

Maybe I'm being stupid here, but why are you struggling for space?

I took the tape deck head unit and in-dash 6 disc 'channger out of my old PD150 and dropped in a single DIN head unit which I believe is what you're doing also (correct?)

The head unit in question was a Pioneer flip-out screen, and that had a massive loom, as well as a hideaway box etc, all which went behind the dash.

I had no worries at all (like I said, I was using the genuine VW pocket as well) so unless I'm misunderstanding you, I can't understand why you're having space issues - Afterall, you're removing two bits of hardware and replacing with one, you should have tonnes of space in there.

Before you go out spending money on ISO adapters and the like, make sure the permanent live and switched live wires are the right way round in your stereo loom - it may just be a simple case of swapping them round (there should be bullet connectors mid-loom). This is the one area car manufacturers can't agree on - which pin should be permanently live and which should be switched, so on different cars the wires will need to be swapped (as detailed above).

the unit i've put in is a alpine 9955R single DIN, i couldn't get it to slide in all the way without pulling the wires into the space above eg removed the cd unit and dragged the wires, maybe i missed some cubby hole that i could have pushed the wires into or something.

i'm planning on robbing the ISO adapter from my old car (vauxhall corsa) as apparently that should work with Volkswagen.

re the bullet wires, the alpine loom had 2 that you had to connect up red and yellow IIRC would these be the ones in question?

Yes, yellow normally denotes a permanent live and red denotes a switched live - it may be necessary that you seperate and swap them mid-loom, so that yellow goes into red and vice versa.

Trust me, you'll be able to get the wires and a pocket in there - you might need to manipulate them to one side or the other, but it does all fit in.
