the bottom pic is the earth strap that goes from that earth plate to a metal sheild around the dizzy cap

ignore it if ou dont have the metal sheild thing

cant work out the vacum hose. Could be off the brake vacume hose. not sure

Edit: If you have a soft brake pedal with the engine running then block that vacume hose. I had a similar problem and almost crashed

no it isnt thats on a 16v i think. that goes from where it is attached in your pic to the mount for the coil on the bulkhead. its the coke can sized thing that the centre lead for your dizzy cap comes out of.

it earths the cylinder head. as long as it is connected to the chassis somewhere it will be fine

Would it cause the car not to start if it wasnt earthed?

I have just swapped my motor and it is not starting, I can only hear the fuel pump (i thinK)

that strap comes straight from the battery negative terminal , car should still start without it though , the other hose is from the white clear hose to the bottom of that one way cream valve . its the vacuum sender for the MPG option on the back of the dashboard. i can tell it is as on your picture ya can quite clearly see the transparent hose hanging there to the right :p

p.s your leads look nice and new but that coil (top right) looks like its been on there a few years and has seen its day lol , if ya get any igniton problems in the future keep an eye on that , coils break down after a while.

also keep an eye on that steel coolant pipe , looking rusty and they eventually rust through , replaced mine recently after i developed a leak on the elbow of it.

ah also somin else , the brake issue is either air in the brake fluid system caused by either a recent change and they havent been bled properly or very old brake fluid that needs changing. check to see if the pedal goes 'stiff' after you turn the engine off and pump it several times. if it still goes to the floor after the engine is off and you do this the master cylinder is leaking and needs replacing which will also cause 'soft' brakes.
