16v cooling .

I own a 1988 Mk2 16v which I've started to track day. I took it to Rockingham last weekend for it's first outing but i found that it got quite hot . What can i do to make it run cooler ? My mate has got a spare vr6 radiator, will it fit . Would a oil cooler help ?

If its a track day car then you should put in a good oil cooler, as the hotter it gets the more pressure drops which will be fatal. On this note you may want to the oil pump to one from a 2.0 I think I read somewhere that you could do this as the 2.0 pump was better. And look for a baffle sump, which will help to keep oil where its needed when your chucking it around the track.

chuck a MK2 GTI 8v radiator in there, track day guys on the 'other' forum swear by em :)

i take it they are a bit bigger than the 16v ones??

im having trouble keeping mine cool when its being given a good work out... :rolleyes:

yeah a fair bit longer :)
16v ones are double cored, but extra surface area makes all the differnce when you're thrashing it about on t' track :)

As i said before my mates got a spare VR6 rad, would that not be a good idea to fit that ? i'm sure there bigger .

you can swap the 2l 16v oil pump into a 1.8 16v all you have to do is swap the pick up over.

I have heard fitting a diesel rad is good as well because they are pretty big and as for oil coolers i am fitting a spare mk1 gti cooler i had lying around with a sandwich plate going out to a remote filter.

yeh they are good they are about 5 or 6 inches longer than an 8v one, they are massive. u have to trial and error it to get a pipe to fit the bottom tho. we did it with a piece of copper tube and just cut an original pipe in half to connect on either end of the tube to lengthen it

yeah i think  it is a diesel one i am going to fit. I was going to go for a top fill so i could fit my coilpack where the header tanks is but they dont seem as big.
