Hi all,
I have had a search around this fine fine forum on this subject and it seems I am not alone in pulling out me hair with these damn rear calipers. Car is a 95 8v gti by the way.
My situation is similar to others, hand brake not holding and the rear brakes not giving it their all. wheel off and pads out obvious signs of kak built up but more pressing is one of the sliders? rusted into the caliper carrier. Ah bum me thinks and opts for some oil on it and leave it whilst down some tea and mutter away about it to my wife. Then back out and gently try to wiggle the thing loose. I was careful to check the other and see that the slider is grooved so turning it out not an option. more oil n tea (for me, well the tea was)
More gentle wiggle and ting the thing is in two pieces. The 15mm nut in my hand and the rest still in the carrier. Ah bum (for the second time) me thinks.
So off with the carrier, er yeah right corroded in after 11 years and 90k sat there holding it all together. Banged in the 8mm allen key, on with the drive and nothing. You know the story lots of pulling, hammering and a big breaker bar and nothing happened.
That was Saturday and I have left the beast oiled up.... for the last couple of days.
Now I did toy with the idea of drilling the slider out but can you get replacements on the off change I pull that trick off? It seems like an A team style long shot but we might make it kind of treatment though. There isn't a lot of space to get in there and do it right is there.
So I am left thinking I might have to grind the blinking thing off. What you recon? Any other tips to move a stubborn mother like that?
Sorry am rambling away like Janet Street porter.
