Gear Selector - 1st gear
« on: 13 October 2006, 16:38 »
My 1st Gear is being a b!tch! sometimes it's ok, then other times it goes into 3rd and you have to go into 2nd and slam it back up to get into 1st. Not good.
Aparantly it's a VW thing, is there some adjustments which can be done?

Chris.

I had the same problem. Down to worn out gearlinkages and adjustment. GSF do a bush kit for about £5.

Sounds like it needs adjusting. There is a good 'how to' guide out there somewhere. I'll see if I can find it for you.............

Please note there are two kits from GSF both good value, one is just bushes the other has the lower part of the inside the car gear lever parts, but I found out this weekend that if you replace the lower part of your gear lever inside the car, that the spring in the GSF kit is too short and thus allows you to push down the gear level too much and doesn't allow you to slot into reverse properly, so be warned, everything else in the kit is correct. Sometimes buying from VW themselves will be cheaper than GSF, I managed to get a replacement spring from VW for 60p - bargain ;)

The link above is very useful.

I had the exact same problem. U need to buy a Shift Bushing kit. Check Ebay they always have it. Easy to install just need to get under the car. Should solve the issue right a way.
No DuB should die.
