steering getting caught on something?
« on: 13 October 2006, 12:42 »
Last night I was coasting down a steep hill behind someone. The hill has a sharp left then right turn, and as I was steering round the right hander the steering felt to get stuck on something (not stuck hard just a bit more force needed than usual) then it seemed to pop past what ever it was stuck on and as it did I could feel it through the clutch pedal. It did it 2 more times whilst the clutch was down (getting fainter both times it did it), then when I took my foot off the clutch it seemed to stop and has not done it since .  Anbody any ideas what it could be?
Cheers

Do you mean the rubber gaitors, where the track rods come out of the rack?

I do indeed :)
I'm thinking they're getting sucked into the rack, which is not good!

you sure it wasn't a slipping P/S belt?  We had this a couple of weeks ago, got the belt changed and all is well...

Farely sure as it felt more of something stuck on something rather than it slipping, as I felt it through the clutch pedal. It did have a new belt on about 12 months ago!
It's not done it again since, so I'm putting it down to one of those things that happens once and once only, he says touching wood!!!

Check you have enough fluid in , and arent loosing it , also i beleive that there are gaitors both ends of the steering rack , make sure you aren.t loosing oil and grease .
