On my way home tonight I had to brake hard and low and behold the steering started catching on something again, so I went round to my old man's so we could have a quick look. Thanks to less skin on my finger and a crushed nail, I found out what it is. The rubber boot on the steering column in the footwell, is connected to a plastic plate that mounts behind the clutch/brake pedal. the rubber had split off the plastic, so the top bit of the plastic (from the mounting plate) had been pushed in from the heavy braking, and when you push the clutch down this was doing the same thing, so one of the bolts on the column was catching on it. I pulled the plastic out of the way as a temporary measure, and will sort it tomorrow.

At least it will be cheap to fix
