Suspension spring broken
« on: 06 October 2006, 21:25 »
Hello,

I was reversing out of a parking space today when on full lock there was a clank.  I stopped the car and turned the wheels from lock to lock and each time it went on full lock the clank appeared.  Jacked up the car to discover approx 10cm piece of the front passenger suspension spring had broken off.

Decided it was safe to drive home very carefully as the ride didn't appear to be affected too much.  Was this a mistake or can it not do too much damage.  How easy is it to fix.  Do I have to replace the other springs?

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

Sounds a bit risky but they would probably be held down by weight if you went slowly. I think you should replace two front springs together as if ones gone the other might go and they other side will be more worn than the new spring. Might also be worth considering an eibach slightly lower and uprated spring kit for around £100.

This happened to my 1.8T - exactly the same. i was actually quite relieved when I realised it was only the spring - made a hell of a noise. Apparently it is one of the mk4's many 'issues'

I was advised to replace both fronts. With hingsight I would have replaced with lowering springs (rears dead cheap to replace) as the OE VW springs cost about £50 each. I had the work done at a none VW garage.

Thanks for all the advice.  Does anybody know where is the best place to just get two replacement front springs from in the South East area?
