Question
« on: 21 September 2006, 20:10 »
Right a question to the more knowledgable of you.

If I was to pop a 2L bottom end in my digifant, would it get the correct amount of fuel?

I ask this as currently its a 1.8 and the correct amount of petrol is injected into the engine, as set-up by VW in the factory.
So, if I increase the volume in the cylinder by changing the bottom end then won't it be underfuelling? :undecided:

Thought i'd ask as i'm contemplating the change. Also, what sort of MPG are people who have done the swap getting?

Lots of people have done the 2L bottom end swap with no fuelling problems.   My mate runs one and on a good day can get a Mid 30's MPG.  He let me drive it and it does pull noticably more than my 1.8 damn it.

Thanks, ive also read that nobody has fuel problems, but thought i'd ask anyway.

I'm considering the swap at some point. Not too long in the future i'm going to have to change the tappets, valve seals etc and i'm debating whether to put the head with all the new bits in on a block thats done 160,000 miles or find a 2e or whatever thats probably done half of that??

would the same apply for a carb engine too? The reason I ask is because my scirocco (1800 carb engine) needs a new bottom end I was thinking about using a 2.0 bottom end with the standard pierburg carb.

Yeah it should cope with it fine, the bigger issue is getting a dizzy on there that will work.  If you find an Audi block your old dizzy will go straight in I think, but the 2e lumps need an adaptor from TSR and we all know what happened to them :(
Someone posted a link up to a US site who sold the adaptors but I've lost the link now!

I don't think you would gain as much out of it though, since the carby heads have smaller valves.  It might be worth looking into getting a GTI head on there to get the most out of it!  But then that can always be done later down the line I guess :)
Main issue with gti heads on a carby is they dont have the coolant channel in the head, but you can drill this out easily enough buy matching the size/angle of the hole in your old head.  Haribo did the head mod to his old carby motor, and used his std carb no worries! :)
