Does anyone know if using these chips have any long term implications on engine wear or anything? I'd be a bit weary of putting something in that might cause a big balls up later on...

It's the 20 quid price tag that worried me. Superchips and remaps are hundreds of pounds, can a 20 quid chip really do any good?
Based on the posts in this thread I'm beginning to change my thinking.

Or you could look at it from the other extreme and see how these companies charging £100 plus are laughing their heads off becasue the chips only cost pennies to reproduce. Yes the development of the map is costly but the reproduction is quick and very very cheap!

The cheap chips on ebay are no doubt a straight copy of a superchips chip. He cant exacly say that in his add though can he!

Exactly.  The likes of Superchips etc are laughing their heads off as they make so much money for so little work.  Granted they probably spent a bit of time sticking a car on the rollers fine tuning the map but then they run off copies for next to nothing.  I know that the blank eproms sell in maplins for around £3.00 each but if bought in bulk they would be around 50p.  To drop a map on a chip takes around 2 minutes and to fit it takes around 5 minutes.  job done.  They charge £120 for 7 minutes work and a 50p chip.  So in actual fact compared to Superchips standards the £20 ones are a bargain.    Chances are the guy doing them has the kit and just copied the map of a superchips chip and then just dropped it onto blanks, either way he's doing people a service.

What you also have to bear in mind is that this is a generic map.  So if you have a mildly or highly tuned engine chances are it won't make much of a difference.  For that you need a Dastek Uni Chip that can be re-programmed to match your mods, now those things are worth every £500 pounds that they cost and the results show.

I suppose . But some people refuse to listen unless they have a more depth expaination, there are a lot of doubting Thomas' out there hence why these chipping companies charge £200 for chips and people are prepared to pay that price.

What I should have added was that Superchips are not re-mapping a car they are just dropping on a generic map that is suitbale for most applications.  I also added about why the chip would not show much improvement on an already tuned motor

Tbh I would rather follow the advice on tuning my 8v first cant see the point of throwing away 20quid when you can do a little work yourself learn about your car too at the same time... I would tune it then see if I like it then decide if I want the chip which I believe is what someone else just mentioned on page one and got ignored
