Golf GTI / Mk.V 30th Edition

I think that the standard GTI has got the ride and handling just right.
1. I don't need a track day machine.
2. I have to live with the car everyday. So I want something that I can have fun with when I want to and not loosen my fillings!
3. I'm not a Journo and have a different car each week.
4. I plan to keep the car and its my own money too.!

i too agree about that . i think the edition 30 is a poor effort overall for a limited edition.As i look at it from the photos so far ive come to the conclusion;

1. the gti is a better option
2.£2000 extra for some red stitching, a pimply gear knob, painted front splitter and rear painted bumper.
3. No full leather option
4. Wheels that in my opinion dont look as disarable then the 18"monza's on the standard
5 £22500 car at BASIC spec is too high before you even think of adding extras to it to make it look the business, ie xeon lights, dsg if youve used one before, Considering the standard gti price is too high as it was compared to the competion hot hatch market.
6. ride according to the car mags is not as good in the ed 30 then the standard car.
7. give it what 2 months, ebay will be selling edition 30 badges FOR £10 to make yours look IDENTICAL!!.

 im glad ive opted for a 5 door, like me if your a family man and have little ones, i wouldnt have the car in 3 door, like in the previous thread, i think 5 door looks as good and makes more practical sense for a family car.and i woudnt get forced by the ball and chain to sell her if the family size was to increase.

dont get me wrong i just think the ed 30 is a waste of money, too highly priced, wont gain much later on resale give it a few years compared to standard gti. THEY SHOULD OF DONE BETTER VW. but how could u improve imo a perfect mk5 gti

It's all about the extra POWER or am I the only one that thinks 2k for 30hp plus some other goodies is not a bad deal (Just look at the difference and price between a Boxster and Boxster S
).  Knowing you can live with both the ST and VXR boys on the straights and have top notch build quality too means it has to be worth the premium.  In fact, i'd bet it kicks out more than +30hp.

Ok wheels aren't great but you can always keep and add on a set of Monza's if you care about the looks.

Thing is all these comments are coming from people who already have a mkv GTi.

Anyone like me, who hasn't sampled the delights of mkv driving yet, thinks a normal GTi is still expensive compared to the competition.

However I'm still thinking the ED30 is a good buy for us.

If i had a normal GTI and saw one with an extra factory 30 horses then i'd also be peeved that i had the wrong car and make alsorts of excuses! 

However.... i do agree that VW could have made more of an effort - more driver focused - more 'cup' like - more fancy 'trophy' damper, LSD like! But oh well - i'll just pay me's money and still get a cracking car....and if you think about it £2k is not that much taking into account what most manufacturers charge for upgrades - ie porsche, bmw etc etc... I took the decision...Recaro's or an extra 30hp....What can i say .... i'm a petrol head - i'd sit on a blanket for more power!

Since buying my first VW a G reg Jetta GTi, about 16 years ago ( it was one of the best cars I have ever owned) I have had a lot of VW's. Including a Corrado and a couple of Gti's, just put my Mk V in p/x for the Edition 30. I think a lot of people on this site are missing the point, its each to their own, thats why there's so many different manufacturers and models out there to try and please us all. I have viewed this site for some time but not been able to access the forum before. I would say if you dont own a GTi then why bother placing disparaging remarks on the site, it is for enthusiasts and /or feedback for problems glitches etc, isn't it.
I note that one hot topic is the specification discussion, some of us are going to be disappointed about the mp3 connection. Apparently VW have had problems with the one fitted to UK spec cars and you cannot now request it factory fitted. I have had help from my local dealer who I should add is one of the best I have dealt with thats Haseldens at Doncaster, they have arranged for me to have it fitted after delivery. I ordered and put a deposit on my car at the end of October beginning of November and have been quoted a week 4 build commencement.  I note there is a lot of discussion over 3 or 5 door colour etc, I have twice had black cars, never again every spec shows on them. So I am going for a red 5 door, Lux pack 1, centre armrest and this mp 3 fitting. I agree with other users, for a hot hatch the ride quality is second to none and in the 21 months that I had mine, not a single problem, rattle or anything. I got 27mpg when having fun saw 48 mpg one hot summer day tootling back home from York, who wants a rattly smelly diesel !   Looking forward to the new car  and I am sure it will be a super car, my MK V was, sorry to see it, go let me tell you, roll on March 2007 .

Some interesting and fair comments there.  I actually have a few (one) confessions to make - this is the first time i'm buying a gti.  Thing is, i've always been a gti fan but i personally believe the mk4 and mk3 gtis have been a bad patch for vw (no offence to anyone with a mk3 or 4 though  ).  Since the mk2 gti, the mk5 gti has been the best model in my opinion (due to its ability to be an all rounder) and i have test drove it many times now.  I was about to place an order on a normal gti when i found out a special edition will be introduced, back in May.  So, i thought this was an opportunity to get something already fantastic, only better.  So, this will be a complete surprise for me as i don't know what to expect at all, not only because i've never actually owned a mk5 gti, but because i have never had the privalege to own a gti anyway.  Therefore, i am expecting this car to put a huge grin on my face come March, which will remain for the years to come!!

Got confirmation of allocation on my car as well - will start to be produced 22nd January (week 4), and will be expecting delivery on March 1st - bring it on!!!

I'd love to have the white 30th edition, but i'd rather put the money towards other options on a standard GTI. Might even have to get a used (lack of money) white one, and there aren't many about. It must be white! When/if i get one, i'll have to get that rear bumper sprayed though.

I got  a used white gti, 06 plate for £18995. Had it for 5 weeks now, never saw another....so far, plenty of envious looks though

 Mr Tibbs, when you say that they are having a problem do you mean the USB armrest option or mp3 playback on the headunit?
