HELP please!!!!
« on: 22 February 2003, 21:26 »
Hope someone can help.
I own a 88 8v GTI and have jus undertaken some majorish work on it. While I was underneath I noticed that one of the bolts that holds my antiroll bar on(back offside mount) was very loose, So I tried to nip it up an found that the nut that I think should be welded inside my chassis like to turn. :o Any idea's how I can stop the nut turning while I tighten the bolt. Good thing is I now know wot the clonkin on my front end is  ;D

Thanks in advance

Hello Roo. :D

If there was room to get to it, I would try and cut the old one off with a hacksaw and replace it with a High Tensile Bolt and locking nut with a washer both sides, get it really tight , it'll never budge.
Other things to check for clunking from my own experience is , front shock mounts, bottom ball joints and very tired wheel bearings.
Give it a go ;)

Cheers. but the noise is defo the antiroll bar and I've jus recently done ball joints poly bushes (where roll bar goes into wishbone) and wheel bearings all round. Havn't done shocker mounts as they seem ok wen I fitted me spax. And I did think of something you suggested but the bolt isn't threaded all the way and I wouldn't of been able to put a nut on. Only thing mates can think of is cutting hole in the chassis to hold the nut wit a spanner then weld it back up wen it was tight. Dont realy want to do this so more suggestions would be helpfull please.

Unfortunately I haven't got my Mk2 shell here anymore so I can't have a look and see what you're on about but I'm attempting to picture it.
Is it possible to cut or grind the head off the bolt, remove whats left of the bolt and then fill the remaining hole up with weld. Then drill and cut a new thread? Not Ideal I know but short of what you have already suggested, I can't think what else you can do. ? :(
Sounds like a poor design to me  >:(

Cheers Rich. May be possible to do wot you said but then I'd still have wots left of the bolt and nut rattlin around in my chassis. I was kinda Hoping it was a fault that someone else has had on here an they could tell me what they did. :-/ O well MOT time in a couple of months so if they fail it on a loose antiroll bar mount I'll ask how much they would charge to nip it up.  ;D
